Airworthiness Lead Engineer
Location: Preston, Hull, Bristol or Prestwick – Hybrid (typically 2–3 days on-site)
Salary: £56,000 – £62,000 depending on experience

A major defence and aerospace partner is looking for an Airworthiness Lead Engineer to join their Airworthiness & Product Integrity function. This is a senior technical role supporting aircraft safety, certification and regulatory compliance across multiple platforms, with current work centred on Typhoon. You’ll contribute to both Initial and Continued Airworthiness, with greater emphasis on early-stage certification activity, and have the opportunity to lead a small team within a highly respected engineering environment.
Key responsibilities:
• Support the establishment of certification approaches for aircraft programmes, ensuring engineering outputs are compliant with the required airworthiness standards.
• Guide the delivery of flight certification artefacts, including the development of evidence to support Military Permits to Fly and Release to Service activities.
• Work closely with UK airworthiness and regulatory bodies, ensuring aircraft design and safety considerations are properly understood and met.
• Review, assure and challenge engineering evidence from design teams, providing independent oversight.
• Contribute to continued airworthiness activities including trend analysis, investigation of defects, and the preparation of technical instructions to maintain safe operation.
Skills and experience required:
• Background working on civil or military aircraft programmes with strong understanding of aircraft systems and integration.
• Experience applying airworthiness and certification requirements within a regulated environment.
• Familiarity with relevant military or civil standards, and an ability to assess evidence packages for compliance.
• Knowledge of safety engineering principles such as hazard analysis and system safety assessments.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to work across engineering, safety and regulatory teams.
Desirable:
• Experience with UAV or UAS airworthiness.
• Exposure to safety analysis methods such as FTA, FHA and hazard management.
• Working understanding of MOD procurement and regulatory frameworks.
• Previous leadership or team-coordination experience.
