UK – Fully Funded PhD in NLP and Time-Series Modelling at The University of Edinburgh
Apply for this role at PhDFinder
University: The University of Edinburgh
Country: United Kingdom
Deadline: Not specified
Fields: Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Computational Linguistics, Biomedical Engineering
Overview
Are you passionate about advancing the intersection of natural language processing and time-series analysis to solve real-world challenges in health data and beyond? If you are driven by curiosity to develop interpretable, text-queryable predictive models with societal impact, this fully funded PhD opportunity at The University of Edinburgh could be your next academic milestone.
About the University
The University of Edinburgh, located in the historic and vibrant capital of Scotland, is renowned globally for its excellence in research and teaching. As one of the world’s top-ranked institutions, its School of Informatics stands at the forefront of computer science, artificial intelligence, and machine learning research.
Research Topic and Significance
The core focus of this PhD project is on developing language-based state representations for time-series modelling, with a particular emphasis on applications in health data monitoring. This innovative research aims to bridge the gap between large language models (LLMs) and continuous-time sensor data to create interpretable, grounded, and text-queryable predictive models. The significance of this work lies in its potential to transform how we analyse and interpret complex, temporal datasets—enabling both causal and counterfactual reasoning.
Project Details
The PhD project will be supervised by Professor Ivan Titov and Dr. Nikolay Malkin. The studentship is fully funded for 3.5 years and includes support for compute, travel, and a standard stipend.
Candidate Profile
The ideal applicant will have a strong background in one or more of the following fields: computer science, artificial intelligence, data science, computational linguistics, or biomedical engineering. Essential qualities include:
* Demonstrated interest in NLP, machine learning, or time-series analysis
* Solid programming skills and familiarity with relevant tools and frameworks
* Analytical mindset and a passion for research innovation
* Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in academia
* Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively
The program welcomes applicants from all backgrounds and strongly encourages women, queer researchers, individuals from racial/ethnic minorities, and all underrepresented groups in ML/AI to apply.
