Consultant in Medical Microbiology

We are a team of five substantive and one locum consultant microbiologists providing clinical microbiology services, infection control advice and clinical laboratory management across the Trust and in the community.
The microbiology laboratory is based at Worcestershire Royal Hospital and holds full UKAS ISO 15189 accreditation, providing comprehensive diagnostic services to the Trust, local general practices and private providers.
Responsibilities
* Authorise laboratory results (Mon–Sun)
* Provide clinical advice liaison service via phone and email
* Conduct daily ITU ward rounds on two sites (Mon–Fri)
* Attend weekly infection MDT, weekly Haematology MDT, bone and joint MDT, monthly TB MDT, AMS ward rounds
* Deliver 24/7 out of hours service and participate in on‑call rota shared with colleagues from Wye Valley NHS Trust
* Provide clinical services to patients and GPs across three sites and in the community
* Support A&E and acute medicine with timely patient flow
* Attend cross‑county and cross‑site meetings and deliver high‑quality clinical care within multi‑disciplinary teams
* Collaborate to achieve Trust and departmental objectives
* When on call, attend hospital sites to review patients and participate in weekend on‑call duties
Person Specification
Teaching Experience
* Ability to teach clinical skills to medical, nursing and other staff
* Experience teaching undergraduate and postgraduate trainees
* Ability to supervise postgraduate research
Research Experience
* Apply research outcomes to clinical problems
* Awareness of current specialty developments and initiatives
* Willingness to undertake additional professional responsibilities at local, regional or national levels
Qualifications
* Full GMC Registration with a licence to practise
* Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in Medical Microbiology (or expected within 6 months of interview date)
* CCT
* European Community Rights
* Success in Intercollegiate Specialty Examination or overseas equivalent
Management and Administrative Experience
* Organise and prioritise workload effectively
* Advise on efficient and smooth running of specialist service
* Manage outpatient priorities and specialist units
* Lead specialty firm and multi‑disciplinary team
* Audit management and clinical audit experience
* Use evidence‑based and clinical audit to support decision making
Experience
* Clinical training and experience equivalent to CCT in Medical Microbiology
* Expertise in a range of emergency and elective problems within the specialty
* Independently responsible for clinical care of patients
* Expertise in sub‑speciality
