Overview
The Radiotherapy departments at NCCC provide a highly specialist clinical technical service in the treatment of cancer patients, receiving approximately 7,800 new patient referrals per year. Radiotherapy uses ionising radiation in targeting tumours, delivered with complex equipment including CT, MRI and Linear Accelerators. The departments at Newcastle and Carlisle have state-of-the-art equipment, including 8 linear accelerators, 2 CT scanners, an MRI scanner and an SXT unit in Newcastle, and 2 linear accelerators, a CT scanner and dedicated MRI slots in Carlisle. Radiographers operate the treatment machines and imaging equipment and are educated to degree level with a thorough understanding of oncology, radiation physics, radiation safety, radiobiology and cancer patient care. Treatments may be a single episode or up to 6 weeks of care, with typically 35–50 patients treated per day on a machine. The team trains BSc radiotherapy students in collaboration with Sheffield Hallam University and the University of Liverpool across BSc, MSc programmes and apprenticeships.
