Unique Opportunity: Culturally Competent Genetic Services

We are seeking a motivated and solution-focused Close Relative Marriage Neonatal Nurse to join our dynamic neonatal/maternity team. This role is vital in providing high-quality care and enhancing genetic awareness among families where consanguineous-related genetic disorders are prevalent.

As outlined in Culturally Competent Genetic Services and Close Relative Marriage, the role involves working proactively with women from Pakistani ethnic groups to:

1. Increase genetic testing awareness and literacy.
2. Improve access to genetic services for families.
3. Support informed reproductive decision-making.
4. Contribute to reduced inequalities in infant and child mortality and morbidity.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will support the implementation of the national strategy at local provider level. They will:

* Develop an understanding of the issues and research evidence of the subject matter.
* Ensure that provision of genetic information is available to women/families affected by this issue to enable empowered decision-making.
* Enable parents to make informed choices in a culturally sensitive, empowering way.
* Initiate sensitive, appropriate conversations with families affected by recessive disorders linked to close relative marriage.
* Support and improve engagement with genetic services for affected families.
* Establish their role within the multi-disciplinary neonatal team and be a point of contact referral for the wider team.
* Work towards incorporating genetic information into neonatal care where appropriate.
* Help to improve access to genetics services for at-risk consanguineous families.
* Support the development and maintenance of collaborative working, including:
o Ensuring a common understanding of genetic risk.
o Promoting the use of standardised resources and materials.
o Supporting joint ways of working across Maternity, Neonates, Paediatrics, Clinical Genetics, Health Visiting, and General Practice in high-need areas.
o Sharing learning across the Trust.

Job responsibilities

Support the implementation of the national strategy at local provider level, including:

* Develop understanding of issues and research evidence.
* Ensure genetic information is accessible to affected women/families for empowered decision-making.
* Facilitate culturally sensitive, informed choices for parents.
* Initiate appropriate conversations with families regarding recessive disorders and close relative marriage.
* Enhance engagement with genetic services.
* Establish and be a referral point within the multidisciplinary neonatal team.
* Integrate genetic information into neonatal care where appropriate.
* Improve access to genetics services for at-risk families.
* Develop and maintain collaborative working relationships, including:
o Understanding genetic risks.
o Using standardised resources.
o Developing joint working across relevant services.

Support networks and partnerships with genomic services, regional alliances, local authorities, NHS England, professional bodies, and others.

Be a local expert providing guidance, responsive support, and participating in training and research.

Support capacity development through training and establishing communities of practice.

The post involves identifying families with probable genetic conditions related to close relative marriage, providing unbiased information, and supporting staff with training. The candidate will maintain clinical skills and communicate effectively.
