The Role

To deliver a safe and effective specialised clinical pharmacy service to the children and young people within NDS in NHS Lanarkshire. The post holder will work in an outpatient environment as an independent prescriber as an integral part of the existing NDS pharmacy teams.

The post holder will support the ongoing development, delivery and evaluation of the clinical pharmacy service, in accordance with objectives set by the advanced clinical pharmacists and clinical managers across within NDS.


Additional Information Specific to the Role

NHS Lanarkshire NDS provide a service to children and young people up to the age of 18, comprising of:

1. Locality teams who provide a service for children and young people presenting with moderate to severe mental health difficulties

2. Functional teams who provide care to specific groups of young people and their families/carers e.g. care experienced young people, eating disorders, unscheduled care

3. A neurodevelopmental service who provide assessment and treatment for neurodevelopmental conditions such as ADHD


NHS Lanarkshire CAMHS & NDS have undergone significant service redesign over the past few years, including the introduction of advanced clinical pharmacists to the service.

This exciting new role will support and further develop the pharmacy service by playing a fundamental role in helping deliver high-quality, safe and patient-centred pharmacological interventions for the children, young people and their families accessing our services. The post holder will work closely with the NDS advanced clinical pharmacists, alongside the wider multidisciplinary team; including psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, nurses, AHPs, mental health clinicians and our administrative support teams.


Provision of pharmacist-led clinics is a key aspect of the role and would include treating patients with conditions including, but not limited to, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), anxiety and depression. It will require the ability to effectively monitor patients’ treatment as well as develop excellent consultation skills. As such, it offers a fantastic opportunity to work towards an advanced level as an autonomous prescribing clinician providing direct patient care.

What we'll need you to bring

4. Masters of Pharmacy Degree.
5. Must have evidence of postgraduate training and professional development in clinical pharmacy practice e.g. post registration foundation framework and relevant post registration experience.
6. Registered member of General Pharmaceutical Council.
7. Must be an independent prescriber (or soon to be completing).
8. Must have the ability to act independently and manage own workload as well as work well with the wider pharmacy and multidisciplinary team.
9. Must possess good verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
10. Will support an environment that provides experiential learning for pharmacy students, education and training for pharmacy staff and multidisciplinary staff.
11. Will demonstrate a commitment to clinical governance/quality improvement initiatives/ service development/ audit and research.
12. Participation in weekends and public holiday service.
13. Participation in pharmacy emergency duty service.


The post will work across North and South Lanarkshire dependent on service needs and pressures. The post will require cross site working throughout NHS Lanarkshire and beyond at times therefore a driving licence and willingness to travel is essential.

Please note for all vacancies where a driving licence is required this must be a full UK/EU/EEA licence.


It would be great if you also have

14. Experience of working within specialist mental health services and/or children’s health services and /or neurodevelopmental services would be advantageous.
15. Demonstrable experience in providing a clinical pharmacy service to a defined patient group.
16. Experience in patient information/education.
17. Experience in supervising staff
18. Clinical pharmacy/care planning knowledge and understanding

Location and Working Pattern

This role will be based in Neurodevelopmental Service covering NHS Lanarkshire Wide.

The working pattern for this role Monday to Friday but participation in weekends and public holiday service may be required.
