Job title: Project Officer
Location: Andover
Salary: £37,021 - £39,718 (annually, 37.5-hour week)
Contract: Permanent contracts. Subject to successful completion of 6-month probationary period.
Notes: Cotswold Archaeology continues to grow as a sustainable and strong business, employing over 350 full-time staff across four offices. Our roles involve leading large and complex archaeological projects and contributing to publication, dissemination and outreach.
Professional standards: Membership of the CIfA at PCIfA level is desirable (or be able to demonstrate that you meet the requirements and commit to joining if appointed). Our training programmes support progression from site archaeologist to managers and technical specialists.
Responsibilities
* Lead the archaeological direction and site management of larger and more complex fieldwork sites and projects, ensuring targets are met and the quality of recording is maintained.
* Line manage and develop staff, conducting performance reviews, providing feedback, coaching and training to improve practices.
* Assure the quality of archaeological understanding and site records, and oversee the preparation of archaeological archives to required standards.
* Author fieldwork reports, stratigraphic accounts and fieldwork summaries efficiently and accurately.
* Monitor project progress and provide regular reports on budget, progress, logistics, staff and health and safety; liaise with clients, local government officers and contractors.
* Ensure accurate completion of administrative records (e.g., timesheets, allocation sheets) and effective deployment and care of vehicles, plant and equipment.
* Promote public awareness and appreciation of CA through displays, publications, website contributions, media liaison and lectures.
* Assist Project Managers with pre-project planning, including drafting written schemes of investigation and trench plans, obtaining service information, notifying utilities and liaising with landowners and agents.
* Deputise for the Senior Project Officer or Project Manager when appropriate and contribute to departmental processes and performance reviews.
* Undertake additional duties appropriate to the role as required.
Personal specification
Essential
* Knowledge and expertise in archaeological practice and familiarity with UK archaeology across periods.
* Experience supervising large fieldwork projects (excavations and large-scale evaluations).
* Ability to write clear fieldwork reports, stratigraphic accounts and summaries.
* Good communication skills; ability to organise, motivate, train, appraise and direct staff.
* Understanding of budgets and timescales within commercial archaeology.
* Knowledge of Health and Safety requirements and relevant legislation.
* Ability to communicate with sponsors, clients, officers of other bodies and the public.
* Administrative ability in keeping records and submitting reports.
* Full manual driving licence; ability and willingness to drive company vehicles (4x4, vans, minibuses).
* Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and databases; basic first aid competence.
Desirable
* Membership of the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists or willingness to join on appointment.
* Potential to author or contribute to reports/articles for publication.
* Knowledge in a particular archaeological period, site type or subject (e.g., finds, environmental archaeology, GIS).
* Survey skills, including use of Leica GPS/TST; basic CAD knowledge.
* Possession of a current CSCS Health and Safety Card or recent CSCS test pass.
