Your mission
As Product Owner, you will be responsible for turning product strategy into structured, high-quality delivery across products used by 1.7 million Credit Union members and staff.
You will operate within a lean, T-shaped Product team, working closely with Engineering. Your core responsibility is to create clarity — ensuring that ideas move from concept to validated, well-shaped backlog items and into efficient delivery.
This role sits at the intersection of product thinking and modern engineering capability.
We are intentionally building toward a future where Product and Engineering collaborate more fluidly ,using AI-assisted tools to prototype, validate, and deliver faster. You should be comfortable working close to technical detail, shaping flows, and rapidly exploring ideas before they scale.
You’ll act as the voice of the user and the business within the delivery team, balancing the needs of Credit Unions and their members, technical feasibility, and organisational goals. You’ll also support innovation and help embed agile and product-led practices across the company — including exploring opportunities to leverage AI, automation, and data insight in our products and processes.

Key Responsibilities;
1. Own and maintain a healthy, prioritised, outcome-aligned backlog
2. Translate strategy into executable epics and user stories
3. Identify ambiguity, edge cases, and risk early
4. Maintain strong definition-of-ready and definition-of-done discipline
5. Ensure sprint predictability and reduce rework
6. Use AI tools to explore flows, edge cases, and scenarios rapidly
7. Help create lightweight prototypes or structured artefacts to externalise thinking
8. Support small, safe-to-fail experiments before committing development effort
9. Surface customer pain points early through structured exploration
10. Reduce time from idea to validated concept
11. Identify and communicate opportunities for improvement, efficiency, or innovation (e.g. through automation or smarter workflows).
12. Contribute to post-release evaluation, gathering insights to inform future iterations.
13. Partner daily with Engineering and QA
14. Act as the structured interface between strategy and implementation
15. Work effectively within regulatory and compliance constraints
16. Act as the main point of contact between delivery teams, Product Management, and key stakeholders.
17. Communicate clearly and consistently about priorities, scope, and progress; communicating trade-offs clearly and confidently
18. Promote agile principles and ensure teams stay focused on delivering incremental value.
19. Collaborate closely with other teams to manage dependencies and share learnings across product areas.
20. Represent your product area confidently in internal reviews and customer discussions.
21. Improve backlog hygiene and delivery standards
22. Contribute to evolving Wellington IT’s product maturity
23. Develop toward broader product-building capability over time
24. Help embed product-led and agile ways of working across Wellington IT.
25. Contribute to growing product maturity within the organisation.
26. Support initiatives around innovation, AI exploration, and process improvement as part of the wider Product & Innovation team.
27. Demonstrate curiosity, initiative, and a willingness to learn — developing toward future Product Manager capability.
Experience & Skills
28. Demonstrable experience as a Product Owner, Business Analyst, or similar in a SaaS or software delivery environment.
29. Strong understanding of agile / scrum methodologies and backlog management.
30. Exposure to AI, analytics, or automation tools and curiosity about emerging technologies.
31. A growth mindset and experience in exploring AI, automation, and new technologies to enhance products, processes, or user experiences.
32. Excellent ability to translate complex requirements into clear, actionable user stories.
33. Confident communicator with strong collaboration and stakeholder engagement skills.
34. Comfortable working across multiple teams, balancing priorities and managing dependencies.
35. Analytical and detail-oriented, with a focus on delivering value and outcomes.
36. Experience in fintech, financial services, or Credit Union technology.
37. Familiarity with APIs, system integrations, and software development processes.
38. Experience using tools such as Jira, Azure DevOps, or similar.
