Assistant Director of Law – Utilities
Must be an attorney licensed to practice law in the State of Ohio and in good standing with the Ohio Supreme Court.
Responsibilities
* Research municipal law issues.
* Prepare legal opinions.
* Draft legislation.
* Resolve customer disputes.
* Review terms and conditions of contracts.
* Negotiate and draft complex contracts and provide legal counsel to various departments on a range of municipal law issues.
* Other duties as may be assigned.
Qualifications
Minimum of four (4) years of transactional work experience in a law firm or another public sector entity focused on real estate and/or utility work.
Strong drafting, research and writing skills.
Excellent verbal communication skills, and the ability to communicate with clients, management, and the general public.
J.D. degree and license to practice in the State of Ohio, in good standing with the Ohio Supreme Court.
Strong work ethic, passion for public service, ability to work with staff, attorneys at all levels, and the departments represented. Team orientation, ability to work in a fast‑paced environment, and meet deadlines.
About the Role
The Law Department's Utilities section works with various City of Cleveland departments on municipal law issues, compliance, contracts, legislation, and providing legal opinions. It also represents the Departments of Public Utilities, Public Works, Health, and the Mayor's Office of Sustainability.
