Role summary
:
The Network Planning Director is responsible for defining and developing the future network strategy for DX. This role will challenge current operating models, identify opportunities for optimisation, and shape the vision for network interoperability across all Divisions. The Director will lead the development of modelling tools, forecasting capability, and analytical insights that support best‑in‑class operational performance across depots, hubs, trunking and last‑mile delivery operations.
Key responsibilities
Network Strategy & Design
1. Develop and define the future depot and hub network strategy, including optimal locations, design specifications, and capacity planning requirements.
2. Shape the long term vision for network interoperability across Divisions.
Volume & Flow Modelling
3. Lead the ownership of demand forecasting by Division, by day, week, and period to support collection and delivery optimisation.
4. Develop volume flow models to drive optimisation of the trunking network for both tactical improvements and strategic planning.
5. Use modelling outputs to influence the optimal hub strategy, including number of hubs, location, size, and operating models.
Operational Efficiency & Optimisation
6. Challenge existing hub and trunking operating models, exploring options such as double deck operations, cage sort, loose load, automated centralised hub approaches, and hub and spoke alternatives.
7. Provide analytical support for optimisation tools used across C&D, trunking, and under the roof activities.
8. Perform time and motion studies to support operational change, efficiency enhancements, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Fleet & Resource Planning
9. Analyse freight profiles to determine optimal fleet size, vehicle types, routes, and location strategies.
10. Support cross divisional planning to maximise shared resources and operational integration.
Knowledge, Skills & Experience
Essential
11. Excellent written and interpersonal skills with the ability to challenge constructively.
12. Strong team working skills and the ability to work independently using initiative.
13. Ability to plan, prioritise and manage own workload.
14. Extensive knowledge of effective health & safety management and best practice.
15. Proven leadership experience and track record in improvement and change management.
16. Strong analytical capability and experience working with forecasting or optimisation models.
Desirable
17. Experience in multi drop delivery and collection environments.
18. Background working with a self employed supplier base.
19. Knowledge of route planning systems and routing optimisation software.
20. Minimum 2 years of management experience including leading teams.
21. Experience working within budgets and cost controlled environments.
22. Competency with Microsoft Office and Outlook applications.
23. Ability to interpret basic business finance.
