An exciting and unique opportunity has arisen to join the Gastroenterology acute inpatient medical ward nursing team, as Deputy Ward Manager to provide bespoke care for patients with Gastroenterology acute and chronic conditions.

We are looking for a qualified nurse who wishes to further their career and to join our existing team. You will be working closely with the Ward Manager and deputising in her absence.

You will be committed to providing high quality care to a range of patients with differing needs and be willing to embrace new role opportunities. You should be able to work as part of a team and be able to use your initiative. Excellent communication skills and flexibility to meet the needs of the service

This vacancy is open to all internal candidates. NHS employees should secure their manager’s agreement for a secondment arrangement prior to applying as this will be a condition of any offer made.

This vacancy is advertised on a fixed term basis as it has been established to provide cover for an employee on maternity leave and shall continue up until 1st January 2027 or when the substantive postholder returns.

Whilst this post is advertised on a fixed term basis there is the potential that this may become permanent in the future.

Candidates are required to present original certificates for qualifications at interview stage.

Main duties of the job

There will also be the opportunity to work closely with Hepatic Biliary, Hepatitis and Irritable Bowel Disease specialist team which will provide the candidate with advanced knowledge and skills to provide high standards of care to our patients.

The post holder will support the Ward Manager in all aspects of ward management.

They will have a key role in coordinating and developing the nursing team and ensuring that patients receive the required standard of care.

They will support the ward manager in ensuring all staff comply with Trust policies and professional and legal standards.

Working with the mutli-disciplinary team the appointed candidate will be given the opportunity to experience diagnostic procedures by working with the endoscopy unit team including ERCPs, EUS and other diagnostic procedures.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Duties and Responsibilities

Key results from the job holder

1. Assess, plan, implement and evaluate the nursing care of patients in accordance with their clinical pathway and individual needs
2. Liaise with patients and their families on a daily basis and deal efficiently with their questions or concerns.
3. Ensure that nursing care delivered within the ward is compliant with legal, professional and organisational standards
4. Supervise and direct the work of more junior staff.

Planning and Organisational Duties

5. Manage the ward in the absence of the Ward Manager, co-ordinating the activities of the ward team and deploying resources effectively
6. Participate in the directorate senior nurse bleep rota as required dealing with emergency/urgent situations, the redeployment of staff and giving advice to staff on other wards as the need arises.
7. Ensure that effective communication is maintained both within the ward itself and with relevant external agencies or individuals.
8. Organise own workload and adjust priorities in response to issues arising in the workplace.
9. Recognise and respond appropriately to issues which require urgent or immediate attention, reporting to other members of the multidisciplinary-management team as necessary.
10. Deputise for the ward manager as requested at meetings and other events.

Responsibility for Finance

11. Contribute to ensuring the effective use of all resources.
12. Bring any potential efficiency savings or anticipated budgetary pressures to the attention of the ward manager.

Responsibility for Health & Safety

13. Compliance with the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 – the post holder is required to fulfil a proactive role towards the management of risk in all of their actions. This entails the risk assessment of all situations, the taking of appropriate actions and reporting of all incidents, near misses and hazards, and a statutory duty of care for their own personal safety and that of others who may be affected by their acts or omissions.

Responsibility for Teaching

14. Maintain an awareness of current identified best practice within the relevant sphere of nursing.
15. Deliver nursing care on the basis of available valid evidence and as detailed in clinical guidelines and protocols.
16. Take a lead role in the audit of nursing care within the ward, share learning with others and assist in ensuring that identified scope for improvement is realised.
17. Facilitate a supportive learning environment for all levels of staff including student nurses.
18. Undertake the role of mentor/preceptor/supervisor to other members of the ward team.
19. Assist members of the ward team to identify their own training and development needs and support them in achieving individual goals.
20. Formally assess the competence of staff and students producing verbal and written reports as required by the ward manager, the university or other departments or agencies.
21. Deliver health education to patients and their families in accordance with their needs.

22. Able to work day/evening/night duty over a 7 day week
23. Speak English to an appropriate standard relevant to their role, i.e. with confidence and accuracy, using correct sentence structures and vocabulary, and without hesitation.

Knowledge

24. Up to date clinical nursing knowledge relevant to the speciality.

Qualifications

29. 1st Level Registered Nurse (relevant branch)
30. Evidence of continuing professional development since registration

31. Substantial post registration experience relevant to the clinical speciality of the ward.
32. Experience of teaching/assessing/ supervising others in a clinical setting.
33. Regularly in charge of ward
