Outreach officer
Posted: 19 August
Offer description

Printed Music Licensing Limited (PMLL), a company owned by the Music Publishers Association (MPA), exists to operate collective licensing schemes on behalf of its members permitting educational establishments (and other users) to copy and arrange printed musical works for use in education and other music settings. Licence fees collected by PMLL are distributed on to its music publisher and print music publisher members.

Reporting to.

PMLL MD and Project Co-ordinator.

Main purpose of role.

PMLL has a requirement to appoint two additional School Outreach Officers to join the existing team as part of a data collection trial that will last for a period of approximately 12 months.

* Liaise directly with schools licensed under the Schools Printed Music Licence (SPML)
* Collect data from them on the specific copyright works which have been copied or arranged under the terms of the licence.

Location, hours & pay.

PMLL is proposing to conduct this data collection and associated schools liaison activity during the terms of the 2025/26 school year. The roles would therefore be suitable for persons preferring to work on a term-time only basis, but the appointment of persons for a fixed term can also be considered.

The roles will be on a part-time basis for 3 days per week (i.e. up to a total of 21 hours per week) and payment will be equivalent to a daily rate of £180 per day plus necessary travelling expenses.

The data collection trial is being conducted in independent sector schools in England which are licenced on an individual basis, and therefore the work can be carried out in-person and remotely as long as the appointed postholder can meet the role requirements.

London Schools Outreach Officer

The data collection trial is being conducted with state schools in the London area, therefore the appointed postholder will require to live in, or within easy access of London, liaising with schools in the state sector across the city. The appointed postholder should be able to demonstrate their ability to undertake this and other role requirements.

Specific requirements.

Successful candidates will be required to undertake (or will have undergone) a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.

As these roles are peripatetic, successful candidates will require their own IT equipment and have access to a motor vehicle or to local public transport services to carry out school visits (expenses will be re-imbursed in either case).

* To arrange and schedule an extensive series of school visits appropriate to the post during the terms of the 2025/26 academic year.
* Arrange school visits to meet in-person (preferred) or online with teaching or the other school staff who have responsibility for music activities in the school including those accessing or maintaining printed music resources.
* To discuss the SPML with school staff in detail, obtaining any information or data that is available on the use that is being made of the licence including: copyright works that have been copied or arranged under the licence; the detail necessary to identify the individual copyright works concerned; the number of copies that have been made; the frequency of making copies under the licence.
* Demonstrate how reporting data can be submitted to PMLL via the online PMLL portal; and subsequently ensure that the information that has been obtained during the visit is put on the system.
* Ensure that the benefits of the SPML to the school are understood and if necessary, explain how the licence works answering any queries that the school may have.
* Maintain careful records of each visit including the names, roles and contact details of staff members with whom meetings take place.
* Maintain relationships with schools, offering additional support when necessary.
* Attend team meetings, feeding back findings from visits and input to year-end evaluation of the data collection and liaison trial.

Targets

* Visit 60 schools per term
* Obtain 1200 lines of data per term

Requirements.

* Demonstrate the ability to work under own initiative and without day-to-day supervision.
* Evidence of problem-solving skills and the ability to positively influence others.
* Evidence of good communication and interpersonal skills.
* Evidence of good IT skills including experience of, or the ability to carry out, inputting data accurately (into the PMLL online data portal).
* Demonstrate tenacity, resilience and the ability to successfully complete designated tasks.
* Teaching experience, or other experience working in schools or education generally
* Some knowledge of copyright licensing or other licensing activities
* Experience of working in or knowledge about music or other collecting societies
* Experience of liaising with schools or other educational bodies in a professional capacity.
