The Role
Are you an adventurer at heart who believe that the most powerful lessons happen outside the classroom? Our Alternative Provision (AP) in Burnley is seeking an Outdoor Education Teacher to lead our bushcraft, environmental art, and Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) programs.
This is a Temp-to-Perm position, offering you the chance to integrate into our unique AP community before transitioning to a permanent contract. We work with young people who have found mainstream education challenging; your role will be to use the outdoors to build their resilience, emotional regulation, and self-belief.
Key Responsibilities
DofE Coordination: Lead and manage the Duke of Edinburgh's Award, including session planning, DofE management, and expedition training.
Outdoor Curriculum: Design and deliver an engaging outdoor syllabus featuring bushcraft, navigation, and conservation for students with SEMH needs.
Safety First: Conduct dynamic risk assessments in local Burnley woodlands and green spaces to ensure safe yet adventurous learning.
Pastoral Mentorship: Act as a key mentor, using nature-based therapy to help students re-engage with their education.
Who Should Apply?
Qualified Candidates: Those with QTS/QTLS and a background in PE or Geography who want to specialize in AP outdoor work.
Unqualified Candidates: We welcome "Train to Lead" applicants with extensive industry experience in mountain leadership, forest schools, or military instruction.
Experience: Previous experience leading DofE expeditions or working with vulnerable youth in an outdoor setting is essential.
Resilience: You must be prepared to work outdoors in all Lancashire weathers and handle challenging behaviour with empathy.
Why Join Our Burnley AP?
Pathway to Permanency: Secure a permanent role in a school that values alternative learning pathways.
Competitive Pay: We pay to scale based on your experience and qualifications.
Specialist Investment: Access to funded training for Level 3 Forest School or DofE Assessor qualifications.
