Every day, more than 80 000 colleagues lead the way to greener and smarter mobility worldwide, connecting cities as we reduce carbon and replace cars.
Alstom is the UK & Ireland’s leading supplier of new trains and train services, and a leading signalling and rail infrastructure provider.Alstom have built, or are building, just under 40% of the UK mainline train fleet; as well as the entire fleets in service with London Underground and Dublin Luas. Could you be the next Services Engineer to join our high-performing Engineering team driving reliability, safety and innovation at Alstom? This is your opportunity to make a tangible difference— improving fleet reliability, enhancing safety, and delivering smarter solutions across rail systems.
Your future role
As a Services Engineer, you’ll report to the Engineering Manager and collaborate daily with a team of motivated Project Engineers and specialists across the business. You’ll be at the heart of safety, reliability, and cost optimisation initiatives, leading workstreams that resolve technical challenges and bring measurable value to our customers. You’ll also manage efforts to address obsolescence, where older parts or systems are no longer supported, ensuring that service continuity is maintained through innovative and timely solutions. All work will prioritise safety, using structured project management principles and close collaboration with central functions such as Engineering, Procurement, and Document Control.
We'll look to you to:
* Lead the identification and implementation of safe, cost- effective short- term containment actions and long- term countermeasures for product safety and reliability issues.
* Deliver engineering changes to improve train system reliability, reduce maintenance costs, and support Customer Variation Orders ( changes to the scope of supply or services agreed with the customer).
* Participate in ROP ( Risks and Opportunities Planning): assessing the cost/ saving implications of actions, supporting risk mitigation, change management, and project planning.
* Resolve technical questions and issues, internally or with customers, to support system improvements and cost savings.
* Represent engineering on the Project Reliability Board, supporting key failure mode resolutions.
* Lead continuous improvement projects that reduce train operational and maintenance costs while maintaining compliance with legal and certification requirements.
* Perform Root Cause Analysis and reliability investigations in line with Railway Group Standards, such as The Rule Book .
* Manage obsolescence: liaise with OEMs ( Original Equipment Manufacturers), suppliers, and external parties to source suitable replacements or modifications.
* Support customer diagnostics and fault- finding.
* Advise on full vehicle systems including TCMS ( Train Control and Management System), HVAC ( Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning), propulsion, brakes, doors, and onboard communications.
* Analyse train data using onboard data recorders and the Orbita remote monitoring platform to identify and resolve faults.
* Monitor warranty claims and work with suppliers to address technical issues.
* Ensure appropriate replacement parts are sourced and aligned with technical requirements.
* Collaborate with Alstom's Technical Publications and Central Engineering teams to update maintenance and overhaul instructions.
* Provide technical support for all NIRs ( Notifiable Incident Reports) related to safety, including coordinating with Design Authorities and OEMs.
* Share best practices and lessons learned from other global fleets to support design improvements and standardisation.
All About You
We value passion and attitude over experience. That’s why we don’t expect you to have every single skill. Instead, we’ve listed some that we think will help you succeed and grow in this role:
Essential:
* Proven engineering experience in a fleet maintenance or asset management environment.
* Hands- on experience with traction and rolling stock systems ( or similar complex systems in transport or defence sectors).
* Familiarity with engineering change processes, risk assessments, and technical investigations ( e. g. 8D problem- solving, FMECA – Failure Modes, Effects, and Criticality Analysis ).
* Ability to interpret schematics, datasheets, and technical documentation.
* Computer literacy ( Microsoft Office Suite and Microsoft Project).
* Experience working independently, with strong organisational and communication skills.
* Knowledge of obsolescence resolution strategies and supplier liaison.
Desirable:
* Degree, HNC, or HND in an engineering- related discipline ( or equivalent).
