The Position The HPC Engineer will design, implement, optimize, and maintain high-performance computing systems to support computational needs in areas such as CFD, DLS and FEA. The role requires expertise in HPC architecture, performance tuning, and parallel computing frameworks. The ideal candidate will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure that HPC resources meet the organization’s research and business objectives. A high degree of user interaction and liaison will be necessary to ensure that the solutions are fit for purpose and deliver on key objectives. Responsibilities: System Design and Architecture: Design and deploy scalable HPC systems, clusters, and associated storage solutions. Evaluate and recommend hardware and software solutions for performance and cost efficiency. Architect solutions for workloads such as CFD, AI/ML, scientific simulations, and data analytics. System Administration and Maintenance: Install, configure, and maintain HPC hardware, including compute nodes, storage, and interconnects. Install, configure and manage RHEL and Rocky Linux operating systems. Implement and manage job scheduling and resource management systems (e.g. Slurm). Ensure system reliability, availability, and performance through proactive monitoring and maintenance. Performance Tuning and Optimization: Profile and optimize CFD applications (e.g., ANSYS Fluent, OpenFOAM, STAR-CCM). Enhance simulation efficiency by tuning parallelization strategies (MPI/OpenMP/CUDA). Collaborate with CFD engineers to adapt models and workflows for large-scale parallel computing. Optimize HPC system performance for specific applications, workflows, and algorithms. Debug and resolve issues related to computational performance, scalability, and efficiency. Benchmark and profile HPC applications using tools such as VTune, HPCToolkit, or Perf. Support and Collaboration: Provide technical support and training to end-users, ensuring efficient use of HPC resources. Collaborate with CFD engineers and developers to optimize software for parallel and distributed computing. Develop and maintain documentation, including best practices, procedures, and system configurations. Security and Compliance: Implement security measures to protect HPC systems and sensitive data. Ensure compliance with organizational policies and relevant regulations. Manage licensing and software compliance for CFD applications. Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field. Strong knowledge of HPC architectures (e.g., distributed and shared memory systems). Strong understanding of CFD principles and applications. Experience with Red Hat Enterprise Linux system administration Experience with Linux shell scripting (bash, csh) and Python Experience of visualizing and analysing system performance and capacity with Grafana Proficiency in parallel programming frameworks (e.g., MPI, OpenMP, CUDA). Familiarity with workload management systems (e.g., Slurm, PBS). Understanding of high-speed interconnects (e.g., InfiniBand, Ethernet). Experience with storage technologies (e.g., Lustre, GPFS, NFS). Master’s or PhD in a relevant field (preferred). Experience with GPU acceleration for CFD applications (e.g., CUDA, OpenACC) (preferred). Familiarity with CFD pre- and post-processing tools (e.g., Tecplot, ParaView) (preferred). Experience with cloud-based HPC solutions, especially AWS HPC (preferred). Knowledge of containerization technologies (preferred). Familiarity with AI/ML frameworks and tools (preferred). Certification in HPC or relevant IT fields (preferred). Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills. Strong communication and interpersonal abilities. Adaptability to a fast-paced, evolving environment. Ability to work independently and collaboratively in cross-functional teams. Ability to work onsite preferred.
