Clinical Scientist (Nuclear Medicine)

Following aninternal promotion we invite ambitious and friendly applicants to consider thisB7 Clinical Scientist role in Medical Physics at South Tyneside and SunderlandNHS Foundation Trust.
The Serviceruns three nuclear medicine departments at the Queen Elizabeth HospitalGateshead, Sunderland Royal Hospital and South Tyneside District Hospital. Wecurrently have five scanners, including a CZT SPECT-CT. We are also imminentlyupgrading another gamma camera to SPECT-CT.
We offer adiverse range of imaging and non-imaging tests, as well as I-131 therapy forbenign thyroid conditions and a massive bone densitometry service. We alsoprovide MPE support to the ST Alliance PET service.
Both of ourclinical technologist and scientist teams are second-to-none, and you will work closely with all members of these teams, as well as awider hospital workforce including consultant radiologists, endocrinologistsand surgeons.
Owing tovariation in clinical demand, you will be required to workcross-site as and when required. If you are workingtowards, but yet to gain HCPC registration as a Clinical Scientist, the rolewill be appropriately re-banded (Band 6) until this Registration is attained.

Main duties of the job
Youwill actively-contribute to a range of tasks associated with the STSFT nuclearmedicine service. This includes (but is not limited to):
1.Vettingand draft reporting of nuclear medicine referrals and reports on behalf of theSTSFT ARSAC/IRMER practitioners for the Service as per locally-approvedreferral and clinical reporting criteria.
2.Regularquality control testing of nuclear medicine equipment, such as gamma cameras,SPECT-CT (including CT image quality), sample counters, contamination monitors,dose rate meters, radionuclide calibrators and surgical probes.
3.Safeand compliant transport of radioactive materials from the radiopharmacy toother hospital sites.
4.Workingalongside clinical and scientific staff deliver a programme of audit, researchand development activities for the nuclear medicine service appropriate to theclinical needs of the Trust and legislative requirements.
Youwill also work closely with the Services Clinical Scientist staff to maintainand improve the STSFT nuclear medicine service, with such examples as:
1. CBRN training with A&E staff.
2. MPE support to our Alliance PET site.
3. Optimisation and development ofacquisition and reconstruction protocols to get the best use out of our state-of-the-artequipment.
MPE certification is notrequired, but you would be supported in your submissionof a portfolio to RPA2000.

Person Specification
Physical Skills
* Ability to meet the travel requirements of the Post which will require some cross-site working at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, South Tyneside and Sunderland Royal Hospital sites when required.
* Ability to move and handle objects safely.

* Knowledge of a range of nuclear medicine procedures.
* Knowledge of legislation, standards and protocols relating to clinical nuclear medicine work.
* Understanding of the functioning and safe use of common nuclear medicine equipment.
* Ability to communicate effectively with other health professionals and patients.
* Good time-management and organisational skills.
* Nuclear medicine software applications development, including optimisation of acquisitions and image reconstruction.
* Patient handling skills including occasional administration of radiopharmaceuticals.
* Drafting clinical reports of nuclear medicine studies for practitioner/lead clinical scientist sign-off.
* Knowledge of the clinical relevance of nuclear medicine investigations.
* Knowledge of standards for radiopharmaceutical production.
* Knowledge of bone densitometry.
* Wider knowledge in radiation protection.
Experience
* Experience in nuclear medicine.
* Quality assurance and calibration procedures relating to a range of nuclear medicine equipment.
* Experience in radiation protection.
* Manufacture of radiopharmaceuticals.
* Experience in training and supervision of trainees.
* Audit, research and development.
* Formal presentations at national and local meetings.
Qualifications
* First or second class Honours Degree in Physics or related
* subject.
* Appropriate post-graduate Degree at Masters level, or equivalent level of specialist knowledge.
* Pre-registration Clinical Scientist.
* HCPC-registered clinical scientist.
