Locum Consultant Cardiothoracic Radiologist

The closing date is 30 December 2025.

We are seeking a full‑time Locum Consultant Radiologist with an interest in Cardiothoracic Imaging at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (NUH) to support the ongoing expansion of radiology services, particularly within Cardiothoracic radiology. This role will support radiology activity across multiple sites, including a new Community Diagnostic Centre opening in December 2026.

NUH prides itself on a large lung cancer service, diagnosing and treating 600 new lung cancer cases per annum. It hosts a large tertiary cardiothoracic surgical unit and the regional PET centre.

NUH was among the leaders nationwide delivering a completely radiology‑led day case ambulatory lung biopsy service, offering direct to home discharge from CT in over 95% of lung biopsies.

Main duties of the job

There are currently 7 WTE radiologists with a specialist interest in thoracic imaging who provide the primary input to the thoracic service: five Cardiothoracic Radiologists, one diagnostic Thoracic Radiologist with a sub‑speciality Head & Neck interest and one Interventional Oncoradiologist primarily involved in lung cancer diagnosis and intervention.

The post will have a commitment to support a range of diagnostic services such as CT, MRI, plain film reporting and ultrasound examinations.

In addition to the main oncological based MDTs, we support a large number of clinico‑radiological meetings involving clinicians, radiologists and advanced practitioners.

The post holder will be expected to participate in under‑graduate and post‑graduate teaching and training and there will be opportunities for research working with the Sir Peter Mansfield Imaging Centre at the University of Nottingham.

About us

With over 19,000 staff, we are one of the biggest employers in the city with a central role in supporting the health and wellbeing of our local population. We play a leading role in research, education and innovation.

Come and join our wonderful team at NUH. We are big believers in diversity and welcome new ideas to help develop our team in order to deliver world class healthcare to the vast patient populations we serve. With endless personal development opportunities available, at NUH we will endeavour to turn your job into a career!

We particularly welcome applications from people who identify as Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic, or Disabled, as we are striving to be better represented at NUH.

Job responsibilities

Candidates must hold the Fellowship of the Royal College of Radiologists or an equivalent qualification and must be registered with the GMC (ideally on the Specialist Register). Possession of a CCT (or equivalent) at the time of taking up the appointment would be desirable but the department has a good track record of supporting candidates in successfully completing CESR qualification.

An appropriate period of specialist training and experience with advanced imaging techniques is desirable, as is a track record in research.

There is a possibility that in the future successful applicants may be required to undertake clinical sessions at neighbouring Trusts such as Sherwood Hospitals Foundation Trust in order to support developing pathways of care.

The successful applicant will be an enthusiastic, motivated individual who is able to work successfully and flexibly in a team as well as develop new services and skills. They will be expected to collaborate with the body radiologists across both sites.

There is currently a 1:10 diagnostic on‑call rota and separate interventional body radiology (1:8). The candidate would be able to explore the on‑call that best suited their clinical skills.

The post holder would join a dynamic team of 7 thoracic radiologists offering a comprehensive elective and emergency service for patients as a tertiary centre. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to develop a subspecialty portfolio within the team through liaison with individual subspecialty groups.
