Offer description

Applications are invited for the post of a full-time Consultant in the Department of Stroke Medicine at our Trust.

If successful, you will join an enthusiastic and experienced stroke specialist multidisciplinary team. Our Stroke Service admits approximately 600 patients with confirmed stroke each year. An out-of-hours thrombolysis service is provided in partnership with Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH). Additionally, there will be some responsibility to provide cover to the acute geriatric wards at weekends. Depending on the skills of the successful candidate, there is an opportunity to participate in the acute medical on-call. A high-risk TIA service runs 5 days per week with dedicated same-day carotid Doppler and MRI imaging to facilitate carotid endarterectomy within 48 hours as needed. At weekends, the service is provided by NUH.

Duties & Responsibilities

1. The overriding purpose is to support the provision of the highest quality patient care through personal actions and continuous improvement.
2. Provide, with Consultant colleagues, a service responsible for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of illness, and the proper functioning of the department.
3. Cover for colleagues' annual leave and other authorized absences.
4. Participate in service development and business planning.
5. Provide professional supervision and management of junior medical staff.
6. Carry out teaching, examination, and accreditation duties as required, contributing to undergraduate, postgraduate, and continuing medical education activities locally and nationally.
7. Participate in medical audit, the Trust's Clinical Governance processes, and Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
8. Handle managerial responsibilities, including budget management where appropriate.

Our inpatient services are based at King's Mill Hospital, offering superb facilities for both stroke inpatients and outpatients. An integrated unit on Wards 53 and 54 serves as the hub for hyper-acute, acute, and rehabilitation stroke services. Four monitored beds comprise the hyper-acute bay, with all senior stroke nurses NIHSS certified and available 24/7 to admit patients directly from A&E and assess potential thrombolysis patients. The remaining 25 beds on the stroke ward are for ongoing acute management and rehabilitation, including a dedicated therapy treatment area. An Early Supportive Discharge (ESD) Service provides intensive rehabilitation within the community, supported by physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, clinical physiology, and nursing and rehabilitation support workers. On average, 40% of patients admitted to the stroke unit are discharged to ESD.

We offer an attractive recruitment package, including:

* An attractive recruitment and retention premium (details to be discussed with individual applicants).
* Relocation budget of up to £5,000.
* A named Mentor for the first year to facilitate settling into the new environment.
* Additional SPA time within the job plan for the first two years to allow service development (typically 7.5:2.5 split between DCC and SPA time).
* Access to additional study leave funding for the first two years of employment.

Applicants must have full and specialist registration and a license to practice with the GMC. Those trained in the UK should have evidence of higher specialist training leading to CCT or be within 6 months of confirmed entry from the date of interview or eligibility for specialist registration (CESR). The ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team is essential.
