Overview
Amazon Web Services (AWS) is growing rapidly, and we are looking for a Data Center Engineering Operations Technician to join our expanding Infrastructure Operations team. This group maintains the critical physical infrastructure that supports AWS. The intern will help ensure the data center's mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems operate at 100% availability while delivering first-class customer service to internal teams and groups within the data centers. The Data Center Engineering Operations Technician Intern will assist with operating and maintaining all electrical, mechanical, and fire/life safety equipment within the data center. The Intern serves as a technical resource to support Amazon within its owned and operated data centers. Data center equipment supporting mission-critical servers must maintain high uptime. Our Interns are tasked with driving innovation while reducing operational costs in the facilities and act as frontline responders for hands-on electrical and mechanical equipment troubleshooting and operations. Equipment includes, but is not limited to, stand-by diesel generators, switchgear, UPSs, PDUs, AHUs, chillers, cooling towers, chemical treatment systems, pumps, motors, VFDs, and building automation systems. This role starts in January and February 2026 (depending on school terms), and is a paid full-time internship lasting 20 weeks.
Responsibilities
* Maintain mechanical and electrical equipment.
* Assist root cause analysis of equipment failures.
* Assist in troubleshooting facility and rack-level events within internal SLA.
* Ensure all safety procedures are adhered to while performing work.
* Take daily operational readings of all mechanical and electrical equipment.
* Able to work a 12 hour shift (rotating 3 to 4 day work weeks and may include night shifts).
* Utilize internal CMMS to manage building workflows and perform rack installations.
Other Requirements
* Walk job sites in uneven terrain.
* Work at heights and from ladders.
* Regularly lift and/or move up to 49 pounds unassisted and participate in group lifts for 50 pounds or more.
* Coordinate body movements when using tools or equipment.
* Reach and stretch to position equipment and fixtures while maintaining balance.
* Bend or twist the body into unusual positions while working.
* Perform physical tasks all day without becoming overly tired.
* Perform extended site rounds that could include long distances of walking and long periods away from a desk.
* Use hands to manipulate small wires and objects.
* Push or pull heavy objects into position.
* Work in a noisy environment.
* Work shifts longer than 8 hours to support 24/7 operations (covering both night and day shifts).
* Work at depths, such as under raised floors.
* Travel to more than one site location (travel less than 25% of the time).
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
* In pursuit of or obtained Bachelor’s Degree within a relevant field such as mechanical/electrical engineering OR
* In pursuit of or obtained certification from a Technical/Trade school program (HVAC, electrician, facilities maintenance, or similar).
* English language proficiency, both written and verbal.
* Ability to work well with others in a team environment, displaying strong time management skills.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
* Experience in project or program management.
* Understanding of mechanical systems (mechanical, HVAC systems, controls).
