This is an exciting opportunity to apply for the post of School Nursing Team Lead.

The Team Lead will work alongside the Public Health Nursing Lead; and will be required to work as a member of the School Nursing Team acting as operational lead.

Please note for this role you must hold a current, valid, full driving licence and have access to a car for work purposes.

Main duties of the job

This role will be responsible for:

  • Deciding how to approach tasks and develop a plan in order to accomplish them and be able to evaluate the plan.
  • Ensuring the team's Key Performance Indicators (KPI) are met.
  • Distributing information to team members and all key stakeholders; supporting the Public Health Nursing Lead in the provision of supervision and annual appraisals to team members.
  • Supporting any SCPHN School Nursing Students, undertaking an appropriate assessor qualification if not already held.
  • Working in partnership with children, young people and families to promote their health and wellbeing and to provide a key link between health and education, whilst promoting multi‑agency working to support their needs. School nurses are the professional lead for children aged 5‑19 years as part of Public Health England’s prevention and early intervention programme called the Healthy Child Programme.

Job responsibilities

The School Nurse Team Lead (TL) provides operational leadership to the School Nursing team, working closely with the Public Health Nursing Lead to drive service delivery. The TL will be responsible for determining strategic approaches to tasks, developing and implementing action plans, and critically evaluating outcomes to ensure continuous improvement. The TL will be accountable for the team's Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), ensuring all clinical and operational targets are met, and acting as a vital communication hub for cascading information to team members and key external stakeholders.

The TL will support clinical governance and contribute directly to the professional growth of the team by providing clinical supervision and conducting annual performance appraisals. The TL will also mentor and support Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (SCPHN) School Nursing students, including a commitment to undertaking and achieving an appropriate practice assessor qualification.

Experience

  • Able to communicate in a clear, effective and direct manner.
  • Possesses strong organisational skills to monitor progress and keep team members motivated, with a proven ability to delegate tasks effectively.
  • Demonstrates high levels of integrity to gain the trust and respect of the team.
  • Displays confidence and competence in clinical duties to instill confidence across the wider team.
  • Post‑registration experience in school nursing, with a deep knowledge of the Healthy Child Programme and the relevant theory that informs practice delivery.
  • Experienced in building strong partnerships, maintaining relationships and co‑producing solutions to challenges across diverse stakeholders, including children, young people and their families.
  • Experience in keeping and maintaining records in accordance with local policy and the NMC Code, and producing accurate reports, presentations and written updates for a range of stakeholders.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of statutory legislation (such as the Children Act 1989) and national policy drivers affecting children's services and the role.
  • Commitment to a culture of innovation, willingness to challenge traditional ways of working and the ability to work flexibly according to the needs of the clients and service.

  • Holds a current, valid, full driving licence and has access to a car for work purposes.

Qualifications

  • Current active NMC membership and evidence of continuing professional development.
  • Practice assessor qualification (desirable but not essential).
