Overview
The Environment Agency has a broad remit to protect and enhance the environment, with a focus on water as a critical resource. We work with water companies to plan and protect bathing waters, and to ensure investment supports the water environment now and for future generations. You will advise water companies on plans to meet bathing water standards and help embed Bathing Waters work within our teams.
What will you do
You will work alongside Water Quality Officers to establish Bathing Waters activities and support the Operational community of practice to fulfil its responsibilities. You will assess Water Company proposals to meet bathing water standards and contribute to developing innovative methods to achieve this. You will collaborate with Environment Agency teams (e.g., Local Area Integrated Environmental Planning and National Water Quality Guidance Teams) and engage with water companies and other external stakeholders to achieve Bathing Waters outcomes.
Responding to incidents is a central part of the role. You will have an incident role and be available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support. Training is provided and may attract an additional payment.
Team
Operations Catchment Services works to secure outcomes across key stakeholders and influence investment in the water environment. This post is part of the OCS Water Quality team. We take a one business approach and work closely with colleagues across the organisation. We are a dispersed team and meet face to face when needed. Training and mentoring support will be provided. Travel to national meetings and occasional overnight stays are expected.
Essential
Experience/skills required
* Knowledge of water quality planning, bathing water regulations, understanding of the water industry and price review processes. Strong communication and networking skills to work with Environment Agency colleagues and external stakeholders.
* Ability to analyse technical information.
* Experience presenting technical information to diverse audiences.
* Organisational skills with the ability to plan, track, deliver and evaluate work to required standards and timescales.
* Work experience in an environmental discipline (e.g., water companies, environmental consultancies, regulatory roles, research/education, environmental charities).
Desirable
* Degree or postgraduate qualification in an environmental discipline (e.g., Chemistry, Biology, Geography, Ecology, Environmental Science, Sustainability, Data Science and analytics).
* Experience in water quality modelling.
