Biomedical Scientist - Haematology/Blood Transfusion (DVH)

Please note, this post is ONLY open to employees of the Kent and Medway Pathology Network.

Applications are invited from suitably qualified individuals for the post of Biomedical Scientist In Haematology and Blood Transfusion.

For the Band 5 post you must provide:

Evidence of State registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) specifically as a Biomedical Scientist,

Willingness to participate in the out of hour's service

Evidence of CPD

We are looking for well-motivated, HCPC registered individuals, with experience of working in an NHS pathology laboratory (or equivalent) to join our Haematology and Blood Transfusion Department based at Darent Valley Hospital, Dartford.

In partnership with Beckman Coulter UK (BCUK) our newly designed and refurbished pathology laboratory houses a range of equipment including: Beckman Coulter DxH 900 Analysers and Slidemaker/Stainer (SMS), IL(Werfen) TOP 700 and TOP 550 coagulation analysers, Biorad Variant II for Haemoglobinopathy screening and Ortho Vision blood grouping analysers.

This position will not be supported for visa sponsorship. All applicants are expected to have valid right to work document to work in the UK when applying for this position.


Main duties of the job

Successful applicants will be expected to participate in an ongoing quality programme to maintain compliance with the Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and United Kingdom Accreditation Standards (UKAS).

This post will require full participation full in a 24/7 shift working pattern and will received enhanced pay in line with Agenda for change unsocial hours payments for maintaining round the clock services.

Job responsibilities

Technical Responsibilities:

Perform tests and assays on all samples as necessary, according to established protocols and required standards.

Ensure that documentation e.g. patient records and manual testing worksheets are maintained to both local and Trust standards (including electronic records).

Undertake technical validation of laboratory investigations, ensuring accuracy and precision of all results

Prioritise samples for processing and results for issuing

Validate and release clinical results onto iLab system, where results are then available to service users

Ensure that abnormal results are reported to the appropriate person.

Service and maintain all specialist equipment according to manufacturers instructions and good laboratory practice.

Carry out basic analyser trouble shooting

Ensure procedures for maintaining equipment are followed

Maintain adequate stocks and ensure efficient use of reagents and consumables.

Person Specification


Education and Training

* BSc Honours Degree in Biomedical Science.
* State registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) specifically as a Biomedical Scientist, Clinical Haematology and/or Transfusion Science
* Evidence of CPD


Knowledge and Skills

* Knowledge of theory and analytical techniques in Haematology/Blood transfusion.
* Knowledge of current trends in Haematology/Blood transfusion and the requirements of UKAS and MHRA.
* Up to date knowledge of test methodology and developments in Haematology and Blood Transfusion
* Methodical and able to organise own workload
* Ability to solve problems
* Good interpersonal skills
* Good written and verbal communication skills
* Ability to produce results within set deadlines
* Knowledge and understanding of more complicated Haematology/Blood transfusion.


Experience

* Basic understanding and experience in Haematology/Blood transfusion
* Previous experience in a pathology department
* Use of QPulse quality management system software

£33,677 to £40,996 a yearper annum inclusive of allowances
