Orthoptist – Clinical Cover
An enthusiastic and motivated Orthoptist is needed to join our Orthoptic team at University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust. The post provides orthoptic clinical cover across all UHDB Trust sites, working alongside Ophthalmologists, Nurses, Optometrists, Technicians, administrative staff and health care assistants.
Responsibilities
* Provide orthoptic assessment, diagnosis and appropriate management of new and follow‑up paediatric and adult patients referred for orthoptic opinion.
* Select patients for squint surgery, undertake pre‑operative and post‑operative measurements, discuss surgical options with the Ophthalmologist and identify post‑operative risks such as double vision.
* Instill appropriate eye drops in patients across all age groups in accordance with local PGD or medical exemptions.
* Provide precise instructions and Trust‑approved leaflets for patients, parents or carers on a continuous home‑treatment course.
* Follow departmental and Trust guidance in managing children who miss their planned appointments.
* Discuss findings with colleagues, pursue training as required, and develop and promote clinical expertise.
Qualifications
* Adult and paediatric orthoptic clinical experience.
* Ability to practice independently with clinical and professional support within the Orthoptic department.
* Experience in patient selection for squint surgery and pre‑/post‑operative management.
