Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Medicines Management Safety Lead Nurse in Broadmoor Hospital.

The right candidate will be someone who is a registered nurse with over 2 years experience post-qualification, including completion of the Preceptorship period. They will have high standards of carrying out safe medication administration and will be able to demonstrate skills in challenging poor practice, while supporting the development of others.

This role will require strong leadership skills to support the continuing development of safe administration practice within the hospital, as well as the ability to lead formal training sessions to colleagues. Teamwork, good communication, and integrity are key foundations to this role.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will provide a source of expert clinical knowledge and highly specialised advice on medicines management and safety in the context of nursing practice, under continuous development, in response to current trends, learning from safety incidents, latest research and guidance at local and national levels.

The post holder will be responsible for instilling a nursing perspective in all medicine related policy, procedures, and strategy, leading on development, implementation, and evaluation; ensuring that theory and guidance is practicable and applicable to current frontline patient care.

The post holder will act as a key liaison between all professionals and departments involved in medicine related process to ensure effective collaboration on all medicine related issues, facilitating true interdisciplinary working, enabling a whole system approach to assuring safe and effective medicine treatment and practices.

The post holder will lead in development and assurance medicine management and safety standards within the nursing workforce, through facilitation of practice-based training, designing reference and learning materials, assessment of competency, support, supervision, observation of clinical practice.

Qualifications

Essential criteria

1. Degree level educated (or relevant experience)
2. Ability to undertake training and duties compatible with the role
3. Registered Nurse (NMC registered)
4. Demonstrable record of personal development including in date mandatory training

Experience

Essential criteria

5. Recent experience working in forensic services
6. Substantial experience in working in complex challenging environment for a minimum of 2 years post-nursing registration. (Completed Preceptorship period.)
7. Knowledge and experience of medication administration and best practice

Desirable criteria

8. Recent experience working as a Clinical Team Leader or in a leadership role

Knowledge

Essential criteria

9. Knowledge of National Policy and Legislative framework relating to Mental Health Services.
10. Good understanding of medicines management, consent to treatment and capacity
11. Able to provide quality advice and to have a high degree of autonomy
12. Able to demonstrate knowledge and skills in mental health nursing practice and current trends within mental health nursing
13. Act in such a manner outlined in the Code of Practice and which meets the requirements of the Mental Health Act
