Offer description

Chambers recruitment and secondments, by specialists who know the Bar .

Briefed's recruitment team places clerks, practice managers, Chambers Directors and administrative staff into sets across England and Wales, and arranges barrister secondments into private practice teams.

Recruitment for a market most agencies do not understand

Senior chambers roles are unusual to recruit for. The pool of experienced candidates is small, the structure of a barristers' set is unlike any other workplace, and the working relationship between a senior clerk and the barristers they support is built on trust that takes years to develop. Matching a candidate to a set requires more than matching a CV to a job description.

Most recruitment agencies approach chambers the same way they approach any law firm. Briefed's recruitment team does not. They have worked within chambers and private practice and have spent their careers building the networks and market knowledge that this kind of placement requires. That includes understanding how different sets are structured, what clerking cultures look like in practice, and what makes a candidate the right fit for a particular role — not just on paper.

For private practice teams, the recruitment team also arranges barrister secondments — placing self‑employed barristers into firms to cover surges in contentious work or specific project needs.

What we cover

For chambers hiring staff. For firms needing barristers.

Chambers staff recruitment

Permanent and interim placements for senior clerks, practice managers, chambers directors, fees clerks, marketing leads and administrative staff. Candidates are assessed against the specific demands of a chambers set — its structure, culture, and practice mix — not a generic legal employment brief.

Barrister secondments

Self‑employed barristers are placed into private practice teams to meet demand surges in contentious work, cover parental leave or long‑term absence, or support a specific litigation project. We draw on an established network of barristers across commercial, construction, regulatory, civil, transport and media practice areas.

Team structure and pay advice

Practical guidance on how to grade roles, where management responsibility should sit, and what the market is currently paying for chambers staff. Useful ahead of a hire, during a restructure, or when a set is reviewing the balance between clerking and management functions.

Head of Recruitment — Chambers & Secondments

Elliott has spent his career working across chambers and private practice. He understands how sets are structured, how clerking teams operate, and what chambers are actually looking for when they hire — which is not always what a job description says. He works with a small number of sets at a time and takes a direct approach: speaking to chambers about the role, the team, and the culture before identifying candidates, rather than circulating CVs against a brief.

For private practice firms, Elliott maintains a network of self‑employed barristers available for secondment across a range of practice areas. If you have a capacity need or a specific project requirement, he can advise on what is available and what would be a realistic fit.
