Mechanical Design Engineer Permanent Full-Time Salary – Circa £40,000 DOE Location – Office based in Hertfordshire Join a leading employee-owned specialist with over three decades of expertise in the design and manufacture of high-quality, cutting-edge environmental and temperature testing equipment. They provide a range of engineering solutions, from off-the-shelf units to complex, bespoke "start-from-scratch" projects, serving the aerospace, defence, and medical industries. They have formed strong partnerships with prestigious companies such as BAE Systems and Rolls-Royce. We are looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer proficient in SolidWorks, specifically within Sheet Metal and Weldment environments. As the company brings its mechanical design in-house to eliminate production bottlenecks, they need a designer with a strong shop-floor background. You will bridge the gap between bespoke concepts and practical manufacturing by creating comprehensive drawings for both fabrication and client approval. Responsibilities, but are not limited to Creating detailed 3D models and 2D manufacturing drawings using SolidWorks for box-section stainless steel frames and complex sheet metal assemblies Developing designs for entire chamber assemblies, integrating additional material and parts such as, mineral fibre insulation, electrical motors, seals and hinges Acting as a technical point of contact, producing 3D/2D drawings specifically for client approval and sign-off Spending time on the shop floor to reverse-engineer existing skeleton chambers and successful legacy designs into SolidWorks Specifying bend radii, fold sequences, and tolerances to support accurate fabrication and assembly of parts Working "hands-on" to assist with assembly and prototyping phases to ensure designs are practical for fabricators Working alongside senior members of the team to integrate design aspects such as control panels, switchgear, and refrigeration systems Identifying and liaising with external fabricating companies and material suppliers Experiences required Professional proficiency in SolidWorks, including Sheet Metal & Weldments environments (experience with Inventor, Solid Edge, or similar is also beneficial) A Mechanical Engineering degree (BEng) or a time-served apprenticeship A deep understanding of sheet metal limitations, weldments, fold logic, and assembly sequences The ability to calculate tolerances, stress points for frames, and sheet metal bend deductions Ideally "come from the tools" with hands-on workshop experience that informs your design decisions Package 40 Hours P/W | Monday to Friday | 8am to 4:30pm | 33 Days Holiday Inc.
