We are looking to recruit a Principal SQL Developer to support a unique capability, NAS. NAS is believed to be the largest number plate recognition database in the UK, supporting Policing and Law Enforcement in crime detection and prevention. The system processes over 50 million vehicle movements daily and contains up to 60 billion records, hosted on what is described as the largest Microsoft SQL Server instance in the UK.

Responsibilities:
1. Performance Tuning: Analyse and optimise SQL Server databases for performance, including tuning complex queries, indexes, and server configurations.
2. Troubleshooting: Identify and resolve database performance issues, providing solutions for query optimisation and server tuning.
3. Best Practice Implementation: Develop and implement best practices for database design, tuning, and maintenance.
4. Collaboration: Work closely with customer and development teams to optimise SQL queries and database schemas based on application needs.
5. Monitoring: Support the implementation of database monitoring tools to proactively identify potential issues.
6. Capacity Planning: Assist in capacity planning and resource optimisation for SQL Server environments.
7. Documentation: Create and maintain comprehensive documentation on database configuration, optimisation, and best practices.
Minimum Qualifications:
* Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field.
* Strong proficiency with SQL and variations among popular databases.
* In-depth knowledge of SQL Server performance tuning techniques.
* Proficiency in T-SQL, including query writing and optimisation, index management.
* Ability to plan resource requirements from high-level specifications.
* Understanding of SQL Server internals, including query processing, data storage, and index utilisation.
* Familiarity with clustered SQL setups and data replication architectures.
* Knowledge of locking, concurrency, and partitioning.
* Experience in configuring SQL Server Resource Governor.
* Experience with SQL Server Profiler and Extended Events.
* Understanding of database sharding, high availability, and disaster recovery.
* Certifications in SQL Server or related fields.
* Experience with cloud-based database solutions.
* Familiarity with other database technologies.
