Do you have the expertise to oversee MCA’s safety critical navigation activities? Have you got experience of managing risk at sea or as part of shore based activity/roles? If so, we’d love to hear from you! The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) is recruiting a Navigation Safety Lead. You will join the Marine Safety & PNT Services Branch (MSPS), part of UK Technical Maritime Services Directorate within the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA). The MCA is the national authority for the navigational safety in the UK Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). Navigational safety is essential to the strategic interests of the UK as an island nation. It maintains the flow of traffic to, from and around the UK to ensure the timely delivery of trade goods, energy and the safe movement of people. Maintaining this traffic flow requires appropriate decisions to be made regarding the citing of offshore infrastructure, management of International Maritime Organisation (IMO) routeing measures and resolution of issues which arise affecting the navigation safety of vessels in the UK EEZ. It also requires the careful management and development of the UK’s coastal state services, such as Automated Identification System (AIS), Maritime Safety Information (MSI) etc. The Navigation Team sits within MSPS and has responsibilities around Marine Licensing, Offshore Renewable Energy Installations, the Port Marine Safety Code (PMSC), Categorisation of Waters, and Vessel Traffic Management. Find out more about what it's like working at: Maritime and Coastguard Agency - Department for Transport Careers As the Navigation Safety Lead you will be regarded as the navigation specialist within UKTMS and, as such, the primary source of knowledge on matters affecting navigation safety in the UK EEZ. You will be responsible for providing navigation advice in support of the Branch’s wider activity as well as Directorate and Agency’s business plans. In consultation with the Assistant Director (MSPS), you will be responsible for working with the Offshore Renewables Energy Infrastructure and Marine Licensing (OREI/ML) team, the Ports/Vessels Traffic Services (VTS) team, and the other departments within (MSPS), to support them with specialist navigation knowledge. As the Navigation Safety Lead, you will support projects and plans regarding the development of new coastal state services and Position, Navigation and Timing (PNT) solutions, providing navigation specific support and knowledge. The Navigation Safety Lead will ensure that MSPS’s inputs into the MCA’s Strategic Plans/Business Plans support and promotes navigation safety and supports the MCA’ s statutory objectives. Supporting with specialist knowledge as required to ensure activities remain navigationally safe.Ensuring decisions by OREI/ML with navigation safety implications have been peer reviewed and are as low as reasonably practicable (ALARP), or within tolerances agreed with stakeholders or regulatory bodies.Representing the MCA, DfT and the UK at domestic and international meetings on navigation safety; including overseeing the drafting and presenting of papers.Supporting and managing projects delivered focusing on improvements in navigation safety.Attending hearings, enquiries or any other legal process meetings associated with the OREI/ML activity as necessary.Supporting the Assistant Director in the execution of the ‘Future of Navigation’ plan, and the PNT resilience plan.
