Overview
This role involves working at ward level and in the dispensary where you will provide an admissions and discharge service. You will gain experience in ward based clinical services (including surgery, cardiology, respiratory, gastroenterology, paediatrics, renal and care of the elderly) and patient services providing dispensing & ACT cover with supervision to junior staff. Responsibilities
* Undertake general pharmaceutical duties under the supervision of a Section Manager or deputy, assisting in the provision of a safe and effective Pharmacy service in line with current policies, procedures and legal requirements.
* Work within patient services undertaking medicines optimisation/discharge duties on the wards, improving the quality of care to patients in a clinical area by means of an efficient medicines optimisation system. This includes medicines reconciliation, assessing patients’ own medicines for hospital use, one-stop dispensing to wards in preparation for discharge, maintaining and ordering non-stock medicines, counselling patients, and providing information as required.
* Work in the dispensary with final accuracy checking of prescriptions and provide support to the dispensary manager and lead technician in coordinating day-to-day running of the dispensary.
* Ensure compliance with GDP and relevant procedures across the pharmacy supply chain.
* Participate in medicines optimisation and discharge activities, liaising with pharmacists, doctors and nursing staff on clinical issues; participate in ward-based education and training of nurses and ward staff.
* Aid discharge planning in conjunction with ward staff and liaise with GP surgeries, community pharmacies, patients and carers to ensure continued supply of medicines on discharge with appropriate compliance aids.
* Check transcription of discharge prescriptions, verify medications before bagging for discharge, and ensure accuracy against the drug chart and locker contents.
* Maintain general medicinal housekeeping of wards (e.g., CD balance checks, stock management, and cost-effective use of medicines).
* Participate in audits of medicines management services and maintain required documentation and records.
* Share best practice and participate in governance, policy development, and implementation of new practices where appropriate.
* Supervise, train and/or mentor student technicians, pre-registration pharmacists and junior pharmacists on medicines management on the wards.
* Dispensary: perform final accuracy checks, dispense prescriptions for inpatients, outpatients or discharge, and manage controlled drug orders with relevant documentation and stock checks.
* Handle front desk duties as needed, process payments, answer staff inquiries, and respond to telephone queries related to work in progress.
* Use prescription tracking systems to book in and track prescriptions at each stage.
* Contribute to the instruction, mentoring and appraisal of technicians and students within the dispensary and medicines management roles.
* Adhere to standard operating procedures and health and safety requirements; manage stock control and security of medicines.
* Be proactive in risk assessment, contribute to policies and be prepared to re-arrange duties to provide adequate ward cover during absences.
* Provide Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holiday cover as per rota.
* Comply with trust expectations and values.
Qualifications and Experience
* Registered Pharmacy Technician with experience in hospital pharmacy environments preferred.
* Ability to work in a busy, multi-disciplinary team and communicate effectively with pharmacists, doctors, nurses, patients and carers.
* Strong organisational, prioritisation and interpersonal skills; ability to work with minimal supervision.
* Willingness to participate in training, supervision, mentoring and ongoing professional development.
