Teaching Assistant – The Role:
Working under the guidance of a senior staff, Teaching Assistants play an important role in supporting the academic and personal development of children both in and out of the classroom.
This role can include getting the classroom ready for lessons, listening to children read, helping children who need extra support, helping teachers to plan learning activities and complete records, supporting teachers in managing class behaviour, supervising group activities and looking after children who are upset or have had accidents.
Teaching Assistant – Key Responsibilities:
- Build positive and supportive relationships with pupils, acting as a role model and responding appropriately to individual learning, social, and wellbeing needs, including ensuring pupils’ safety and access to learning
- Support the teacher in creating an effective learning environment by assisting with lesson preparation, classroom organisation, behaviour management, assessment activities, and providing general administrative support
- Help pupils access the curriculum in line with individual learning plans or targets, with particular support in reading, ICT, and the use of appropriate learning resources and equipment
- Monitor, record, and report on pupils’ progress, behaviour, attendance, and welfare, working sensitively with parents, carers, and other professionals in line with school policies
- Contribute to the wider life of the school by promoting inclusion and equality, maintaining accurate records, attending training and meetings, and supervising pupils during breaks, trips, and out-of-school activities
Teaching Assistant – You:
- Relevant experience in a school or similar setting
- Experience of working with children and young people with special educational needs and/or social, emotional and mental health difficulties
- Experience of using restorative practices
- Experience of supporting pupils with strategies to enable them to settle to learn
