LIBRTI is a £200m fusion fuel capability programme aiming to deliver a world-first testbed for engineering-scale fusion fuel prototype testing at Culham site in Oxfordshire. It involves adapting a building, installing a 14 MeV neutron source, and conducting extensive research in areas like tritium accountancy, chemistry, molten salt engineering, multiphysics simulations, and uncertainty quantification. The goal is to run multi-tonne experiments with global partners, providing digital twin insights for future fusion power plant design.
The Role
The programme seeks candidates in materials, chemistry, chemical/process engineering, mathematics, and physics. Research is fast-paced, involving collaboration with UK universities and international fusion labs, with opportunities for conference attendance and overseas secondments. The team works with specialists across various disciplines on a campus with amenities and a vibrant social culture.
Responsibilities:
* Participate in UKAEA’s research on breeder development for fusion. Organize and coordinate projects, equipment, scope, and resources.
* Deliver high-quality research or engineering in tritium breeding through independent and creative efforts.
* Present results in reports, conferences, and publications.
* Manage a team of scientists and engineers, providing direction and oversight during experiments and modeling.
* Handle line management and recruitment activities.
* Lead in materials and technology for fusion power plants, collaborating with internal and external partners.
* Manage relationships with external collaborators to enhance capabilities and develop new projects.
* Propose, secure funding, and contribute to project delivery aligned with strategic goals.
* Represent UKAEA at conferences and meetings.
Qualifications
Essential:
* Expertise in areas like tritium experimentation, breeding science, modeling, materials, etc.
* Experience in laboratory or materials research environments.
* Ability to communicate complex technical information effectively.
Desirable:
* PhD in materials science or related field.
* Experience in materials processing, analysis, modeling, or engineering design.
* Experience working with tritium or in nuclear environments.
* Knowledge of analytical instruments or engineering models.
