Health & Safety Specialist - Meat Processing (Site-Based Role)
Location: Jarrow (Site-Based)
Job Type: Temporary / Contract (2-3 days per week)
We are currently recruiting a hands‑on Health & Safety Specialist to support a busy meat processing site. This is a practical, site‑based role focused on reviewing, improving, and implementing Health & Safety systems in line with UK legislation within a chilled, high‑risk production environment.
This is not a desk‑based role - we are looking for someone who will be actively present on the factory floor, working alongside production teams to drive real improvements in health and safety, compliance, and working practices.
Please note: This role focuses on occupational Health & Safety only and does not include Food Safety or hygiene compliance.
Working Hours
* 08:00 - 16:00
* 2-3 days per week
* Flexibility may be required depending on production demands
Pay Rate
* £18.00 per hour
* Site‑based role
Key Responsibilities
* Review and enhance existing Health & Safety procedures within a meat processing environment
* Conduct risk assessments covering machinery, manual handling, knife work and chilled conditions
* Develop and manage COSHH assessments (e.g. cleaning chemicals, disinfectants)
* Carry out regular site inspections across production, cutting, packing, and dispatch areas
* Identify health and safety hazards and implement practical control measures on the factory floor
* Investigate incidents, near misses, and injuries, recommending corrective actions
* Deliver toolbox talks and basic safety training to operatives and supervisors
* Work closely with production teams to ensure safe systems of work are understood and followed
* Support compliance with PPE requirements and safe use of equipment
Requirements
* NEBOSH General Certificate or equivalent Health & Safety experience
* IOSH membership (preferred)
* Proven experience within meat processing, food production, or similar high‑risk manufacturing environments
* Strong understanding of hazards such as manual handling, sharp tools, machinery, and cold environments
* Hands‑on, proactive approach with the ability to influence shop floor behaviours
* Comfortable working in chilled, fast‑paced production settings
* Reliable, professional, and confident communicator
