Job Title: Birmingham City University Men's Rugby Programme,

Head Coach

Location: Birmingham City University

Salary: Range from £20 to £25 p/h (dependent on qualification level)

REPORTS TO:

BCU Sports Development Officer

JOB PURPOSE:

Birmingham City University are recruiting a Head Coach for our Men's Rugby programme.

The successful candidate will lead the programme (approx 6 hrs p/w) across the University season. The Head coach will be expected to attend approx 14 matches across 26 week season plus one training per week (currently Monday evenings). Additional aspects of the role are explained in detail later in this job description.

EMPLOYMENT TERMS:

The successful individual would be employed as a casual staff member at Birmingham City

University between September 2025 through to April 2026. The candidate would be subject to an end of season review with excellent prospects for continuation thereafter for September 2026.

MAIN DUTIES:

The post-holder will be expected to:

Plan and deliver coaching sessions for the players as part of their weekly training programme.

Sessions are traditionally a Monday evening.

Deliver match day coaching (for both home and away games) and preparation for the selected squad as part of their BUCS league and cup fixtures

Plan, deliver and review individual player development sessions as required

Work collaboratively with programme staff in the relation to athlete welfare and medical services

Plan and deliver performance reviews with the players both individually and collectively focussing on the development of playing skills and game understanding

Provide holistic and ongoing education and support to the players athletes on performance development

Maintain a player database and other necessary record keeping and reporting for BCU or the

RFU

Liaise with National Governing Bodies regarding any pathway athletes and their support services

Support the development, implementation and review of the 'compete' strand of the BCU

Sport PACE model

Effectively communicate with players, other staff, senior staff and other stakeholders as requested

Undertake a planned programme of continuing professional development and mentoring, including attendance at internal and external meetings and courses

Any other duties as may reasonably be required, consistent with the grade of the post

General

1. Co-operate in any staff development activities required to effectively carry out the duties of the post and to participate in BCU Sport reviews and development schemes.

2. Compliance with all BCU policies and procedures.

3. Comply with all legislative and regulatory requirements.

4. To promote a positive image of BCU.

5. Any other duties commensurate with the level of the post, which may be required from time to time including evening and weekend work.

Qualifications & Attainments

Experience of coaching University level players both experienced and new to the game

RFU Level 2 (ideally a Level 3)

Evidence of relevant and continuing professional development

First Aid qualification (this can be arranged if required)

Experience/Knowledge

Knowledge and experience of coaching in environments focused on BUCS leagues and tournaments

An excellent understanding of Men's Rugby, including managing student athletes and creating a positive and developmentally focussed environment,

Experience of strategic planning, implementation and monitoring of resource allocation within Rugby

Experience of working with student clubs and student players

A good understanding of how UK further and higher educational establishments operate, and sports development structures including AASE and TASS

A good understanding and experience of developing individual performance plans for players
