Consultant Dermatologist

The successful candidate will be based at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital, Llantrisant, and will spend time at Princess of Wales Hospital and Ysbyty Cwm Rhondda. They will complement the existing dermatology service across Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board and be expected to provide on average 7 clinical sessions per week. The dermatology consultants rotate between outpatients, ward work, and subspecialty sessions. This allows protected time for audit, research, and teaching and will facilitate the development of the dermatology service. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to service mapping and to service redesign within the new Cwm Taf Morgannwg Health Board.
The post holder's job plan will reflect the need to maintain and develop their clinical skills and expertise, although the central tenet of the role is focused on clinical leadership.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will play a pivotal role in ensuring effective communication processes to ensure that all clinical stakeholders:
* Are aware of the range of services available, the standards to which they operate, and the evidence base supporting their use.
* Understand the service vision and its implications on their practice.
* Are able to contribute to the planning and evaluation of all services.
As a senior employee of the Health Board, the post holder will work closely with, and support, other clinical, medical professional, and managerial colleagues to provide high-quality healthcare to the patients.

Job responsibilities
Clinical
The post holder will provide, with clinical colleagues, a dermatology service to the hospitals within the Health Board, with responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of dermatological conditions.
* The post holder will have ongoing responsibility for the care of patients under their care, including delegation and training of junior staff.
* In liaison with consultant colleagues, they will be responsible for the department's proper functioning in line with operational/strategic plans.
* They will contribute to business planning through active participation in the clinical directorate.
* Travel between hospitals/clinics will be required as necessary.
* There is no formal out-of-hours on-call arrangement; out-of-hours cover is currently provided by the on-call physician and additional support from the on-call dermatology registrar at the tertiary centre.
* The Dermatology Department follows RCP guidance. The Health Board will support 3 CME/CPD sessions, provide dedicated office and secretarial support.
Teaching/Training
The post holder will carry out teaching, examination, and accreditation duties, contributing to postgraduate and continuing medical education locally and nationally.
* All consultants teach and train at postgraduate level; there is an active postgraduate training department at Royal Glamorgan Hospital.
* The successful candidate will participate in weekly departmental teaching/audit sessions.
* They will be named as an educational supervisor for junior staff assigned to them, overseeing training and providing career advice.
Audit
The post holder will participate in clinical audits and risk management activities, promoting evidence-based practice.
* Annual audit presentation afternoons are scheduled, with attendance expected from senior and junior staff.
Quality and Standards
* Adhere to regulatory frameworks, including NICE and National Service Framework Guidance, and promote professional standards.
* Work in accordance with health board procedures and policies.
* Attend conferences and meetings to update skills.
* Participate in appraisal, job planning, and revalidation processes.
Patient Experience and Safety
* Monitor and respond to patient experience measures.
* Work to reduce harm and contribute to patient safety campaigns.

Person Specification
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
* Good organizational and communication skills.
* Experience and participation in clinical audit.
* Proven clinical ability; leadership qualities; publications desired.
Education and Qualifications
* Full GMC registration.
* GMC specialist register for dermatology or CCT within 6 months of interview.
* Higher degree (MD, PhD, etc.).
Experience
* Extensive dermatology experience, including paediatric dermatology.
* Knowledge of NHS practices.
