Workingunder the direction of registered healthcare professionals, this role willsupport the delivery of safe, high-quality patient care. Core responsibilitiesinclude phlebotomy, ECG recording, simple wound care, assisting with healthpromotion activities and supporting long-term condition reviews.

The post holder will work within clear parameters and lines ofaccountability after appropriate training and assessment of competence. Therequirements of the post are linked to the Level 3 of the District and GeneralPractice Nursing Service Education and Career Framework (Health ServiceEngland).


Main duties of the job

PrimaryDuties and Areas of Responsibility

Workingwithin clinical guidelines and protocols, undertake and record:

* Urinalysis and preparation of specimens forlaboratory analysis
* Temperature, pulse and respiratory rate
* Weight, height, waist circumference and Body MassIndex
* Measurement of legs for compression hosiery
* ECGs and ambulatory blood pressure monitoring
* Near patient testing, e.g. blood glucose, lipids andINR
* Doppler ultrasound measurements (working with aRegistered Nurse)
* Measurement of airway function (Peak expiratory flowrate and spirometry)
* Obtainvenous blood samples for investigation
* Administerselected vaccines in accordance with the national schedule and legislation

Carry outcare of simple wounds and apply dressings Remove woundclosure materials including sutures, clips and staples Assist withthe management of clinical supplies Participatein quality improvement e.g audit, development of protocols and new services

Job responsibilities

In the performance of the duties outlinedin this job description, the post-holder may have access to confidentialinformation relating to GP practices, patients and their careers, practicestaff, GP federation staff and other healthcare workers. They may alsohave access to information relating to the federation as a businessorganisation. All such information from any source is to be regarded asstrictly confidential

Person Specification


Knowledge and skills

* Ability to provide quality care
* Good interpersonal and communication skills
* Good organisational and effective time management skills
* Good team working
* Ability to work independently following verbal or written instructions
* Knowledge of EMIS
* Skills in phlebotomy, ECGs, patient health checks, blood pressure
* Basic First Aid Knowledge
* Awareness of blood borne viruses


Experience

* Experience within a healthcare setting
* Experience within primary care


Qualifications

* Qualified in Phlebotomy
* Qualified to NVQ Level 3
