The Laurence Sterne Trust (a charitable incorporated organisation; charity number 1181127) seeks someone with accounting knowledge to join its small and friendly board of trustees.
Among other responsibilities, the trustee would:
1. Supervise all financial matters
2. Provide financial information for trustee meetings
3. Attend three or four trustee meetings per year
4. Prepare annual accounts for submission to our independent examiner and the Charity Commission
There would be a thorough handover by the current treasurer.
The Laurence Sterne Trust celebrates the life, works, and enduring cultural legacy of the writer Laurence Sterne (1713-1768). The Trust is based at Shandy Hall in Coxwold, North Yorkshire, where Sterne became "perpetual curate" in 1760, shortly after becoming famous for The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman. Shandy Hall was his writing base in the 1760s. Sterne's comic masterpieces (Tristram Shandy and A Sentimental Journey through France and Italy) are highly original and experimental works of fiction. Sterne's influence on world literature and the arts has been profound and enduring.
The Trust operates Shandy Hall as a museum for public education and benefit. The Hall is a Grade I listed building dating back to the fifteenth century, set in two acres of gardens, including formal areas and a large Wild Garden. The Hall houses probably the finest collection of Sterne-related materials in the world. It is open to the public during summer months and by appointment at other times. The collection is accessible to scholars and enthusiasts. Admission to exhibitions in the gallery, including a current show of work by Glen Baxter, is free.
Visitor feedback is overwhelmingly positive. Visitors appreciate the Curator's tours, his ability to link Sterne to the present age, the emphasis on wildlife welfare in the gardens, and the tranquil atmosphere of the site. Shandy Hall is an important local and international amenity.
