Job Overview
The Endoscopy Matron is responsible for providing visible, professional, and operational leadership across the Endoscopy service. The post holder will ensure delivery of safe, effective, high-quality, patient-centred care in line with NHS standards, JAG accreditation requirements, CQC standards, infection prevention guidance, and Trust objectives.
The post holder will lead nursing and support teams within the endoscopy service, ensuring effective workforce management, governance, quality improvement, patient flow, operational performance, and financial stewardship.
The Endoscopy Matron will work collaboratively with clinical, operational, and corporate colleagues to ensure the delivery of responsive, efficient, and sustainable endoscopy services.
Main duties of the job
* Provide strong, visible leadership to nursing and multidisciplinary teams within the endoscopy service
* Promote high standards of patient‑centred care, dignity, safeguarding, and patient experience
* Ensure compliance with JAG standards, CQC regulations, infection prevention policies, and Trust clinical governance frameworks
* Lead on patient safety initiatives and ensure learning from incidents, complaints, audits, and investigations
* Support the development of evidence‑based practice and continuous quality improvement
* Ensure appropriate escalation and management of clinical risks
* Act as a role model for professional nursing practice
* Lead recruitment, retention, appraisal, supervision, and performance management processes
* Ensure appropriate staffing levels, skill mix, and workforce planning
* Support staff wellbeing, engagement, and professional development
* Foster a positive culture that promotes inclusion, equality, and teamwork
* Manage sickness absence, conduct, capability, and HR processes in accordance with Trust policy
* Support education and training programmes for nursing and support staff
* Lead day‑to‑day operational management of the endoscopy service
* Ensure efficient patient flow and achievement of service performance targets
* Monitor and manage waiting lists, utilisation, productivity, and capacity
* Support delivery of national targets including cancer pathways and diagnostic waiting times
* Work collaboratively with operational teams to maximise theatre and procedure room efficiency
* Participate in business continuity and escalation planning
* Support JAG accreditation and continuous service improvement
Person specification
Qualifications
* Registered Nurse (Adult) with current NMC registration
* Degree in Nursing or related subject
* Evidence of continuing professional development
* Masters level education in related subject or studying towards this
* Willingness to undertake further training
Skills
* Strong leadership and people management skills
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
* Ability to manage change and service pressures
* Ability to analyse performance and quality data
* Strong organisational and decision‑making skills
Knowledge
* Knowledge of JAG standards and endoscopy pathways
* Understanding of infection prevention and patient safety requirements
* Understanding of workforce and HR processes
* Significant senior nursing experience within endoscopy or gastroenterology services
Safeguarding children and adults
* Ensure you are familiar with and comply with the London Child Protection Procedures and protocols for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young people
* Ensure you are familiar and comply with the London Multi‑Agency Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults Pan London Procedures
* Ensure you are familiar and comply with local protocols and systems for information sharing
* Know the appropriate contact numbers and required reporting lines
* Participate in required training and supervision
* Comply with required professional boundaries and codes of conduct
