About Zak
Zak is a happy, lively 12-year-old with autism, learning disability, ADHD and sensory processing difficulties. He is non-verbal and may use picture symbols, a communication book or VOCA to make choices, and may use Makaton or other gestures. He enjoys outdoor activities, water and sand play, and can be very determined. He may be physically challenging and has no awareness of danger. He relies on an adult to problem solve and prompt his needs.
Role and responsibilities
As Zak’s Personal Assistant, you will work under directing supervision and take initiative to meet his needs. You will be accountable to the family for all aspects of your work, including:
* Provide care, support and companionship to Zak in the home and in the community on a 2:1 basis.
* Model and use Zak’s communication methods (communication book, VOCA, picture symbols, Makaton or other gestures) to support choices and needs.
* Support Zak with routines, expectations and demand communication; deescalate when needed and manage behavioural challenges with patience and confidence.
* Be prepared to engage in all aspects of personal care and be physically fit to meet the demands of the role.
* Be reliable, use initiative, and maintain confidentiality and privacy.
Requirements and qualifications
* Driver with a clean UK driving licence is essential.
* DBS check and references will be sought if offered the post.
* Must have permission to work in the U.K. at the start of employment.
* Open to diversity and respectful of cultural and religious differences.
