The post holder has a key leadership and specialist role at a senior level to support the organisation in the delivery of care for cancer patients and their families. This will be in accordance with the philosophy and standards of care within the specialty, ensuring that Trust values and beliefs are upheld. In addition, the Specialist Nurse has a fundamental role in leading on the development and the effective delivery of specialist cancer nursing to reflect the evolving health care agenda.


Main duties of the job

In conjunction with the Head of Nursing, Lead Cancer Nurse and Matron, will deliver the modernisation agenda within their clinical setting, including effective leadership, monitoring, and maintaining professional and care standards, work collaboratively, manage complaints as per Trust policy and lead the specialist nursing contribution to the governance agenda.

Lead by example and act as a positive role model for all staff, taking responsibility for own professional development.

Provide leadership that promotes patient focused care.

Lead on the development and delivery of cancer education and training for patients and staff, relevant to specialist nursing practice.

Provide clinical leadership and line management of staff if appropriate, ensuring the delivery of the highest professional standards through staff development and individual performance appraisal/review.

Maintain personal standards of conduct and behavior, which are consistent with Trust and Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) standards and requirements.

Actively contribute to, and support agreed developments within the Business Group, relevant to specialty

Act as key workers within agreed tumor specific protocols, leading on patient and carer communication issues and co-ordinate the patient pathway.

Provide expert nursing advice and support to other Health Care Professionals (HCP)

Person Specification

* Post-basic qualification in cancer/palliative care or relevant subject
* Evidence of Masters level learning or prepared to work towards
* Evidence of continued professional development
* Counselling qualification/training
* Understanding of NHS Policy documents, NICE guidelines, Cancer Waiting Times
* Nurse Prescribing
* Ability to demonstrate leaderships skills within the nursing specialty.
* Ability to deliver programs of education and training.
* Ability to organise and negotiate workload and competing priorities within a department/service
* National Advanced Communications Skills Training or willing to work towards
