Summary

We are looking for an ENT Consultant Surgeon for a 1‑year fixed‑term post with likelihood of extending into a substantive role, who can provide a comprehensive general ENT service in a busy acute trust on the outskirts of London. The successful candidate should ideally have adequate experience in general ENT and offer clinical skills/interests that will complement the needs of the department. They should be competent in all routine ENT surgery, including Otology, Rhinology, paediatric ENT and head and neck cancer surgery. They will take part in the surgical activities performed at the Surgical Hub at St. Albans as required, and work with the relevant ENT teams at Mid and South Essex Trust (Broomfield, Southend and Basildon), exchanging ideas and activities to promote patient safety and research. They should be able to provide cover throughout the wider geographic Essex area when required. On‑call commitment is 1:12 within the Essex wide ENT Network Service (Hub & Spoke model with Broomfield Hospital as hub and four spoke hospitals).


Main Duties

Successful candidate must be able to make independent decisions regarding patient treatment plans and conduct independent theatre sessions on a broad range of ENT conditions. They must handle difficult patients in an acute setting and manage expectations according to treatment plans. The fast‑developing department consists of enthusiastic consultants and hard‑working specialist doctors, with training programmes for juniors in ENT and A&E. We are looking for a keen individual with innovative ideas, willing to work hard and participate in building a dynamic department. The ENT on‑call provides integral support to the local community and handles all aspects of ENT trauma. The majority of service and treatment is delivered in the A&E setting to ambulatory patients.

Job Description


Job Responsibilities

The ENT on‑call provides integral support to the local community, handling all aspects of ENT trauma. Most service is delivered in the A&E setting to ambulatory patients.

The successful applicant will be part of the 1:12 on‑call rota based at Broomfield Hospital.

* Out of hours cover for new A&E attendances (Essex network area)
* Out of hours cover for ward patients (average 8 per week elective/emergency)
* Out of hours cover for elective patients’ emergency attendances
* Effective clinical risk management for ENT activity in all aspects
* ENT service for both children and adults
* Supervise and teach specialist doctors at registrar level and GPVTS trainees at junior doctor level
* Work with GPs to develop community services and guidelines, providing support, teaching and training

The candidate will join the existing establishment delivering a broad range of general ENT services at PAHT, promoting day‑case surgery in line with the British Association of Day Surgery and National Targets, while supporting primary care practitioners. They are expected to contribute to junior doctor training, audit and research programmes, and be actively involved in specialty management at PAHT and Broomfield Hospital.

The post holder will be based at PAHT in Harlow but will undertake outpatient sessions at St Margaret’s Hospital in Epping and Herts & Essex Hospital in Bishop’s Stortford. Cover at the new Elective Hub at St Albans may also be required. Outpatient clinic venues may change as required by the Trust.

* Registered with GMC on the specialist register
* FRCS or equivalent
* FRCS (ORL‑HNS)
