Summary:

As a Music Therapist, you will play a vital role in facilitating healing, emotional growth, and communication through the power of music. You will support our young people by using your expertise in music and therapeutic techniques to help them explore and express feelings, develop self-awareness, and build positive relationships.

This includes supporting children and young people experiencing:

Emotional and behavioural difficulties

Learning disabilities

Social engagement challenges

Speech and language difficulties

Children and young people on the Autism Spectrum

Responsibilities:

Your role entails being an inspiring and creative Music Therapist, working as part of an established therapeutic team to provide music-based interventions for children and young people in care. You will work both on a one-to-one basis and with small groups, and will be able to engage effectively professionals.

The therapist role requires a strong understanding of child development and play, excellent communication, observation, and listening skills. Candidates must be comfortable using a range of instruments and music-based techniques to meet diverse needs, making valid assessments and demonstrating evidence of a flexible and inclusive therapeutic practice.

You will need to maintain confidentiality, keep accurate records, and adhere to all safeguarding policies and procedures.

Regular supervision is essential to your role, alongside keeping up to date with CPD requirements and current best practice in music therapy.

Main Duties:

Deliver one-to-one and small group music therapy sessions for young people aged 10–18

Assess young people's needs and develop tailored therapeutic plans using music-based interventions

Use a range of musical activities, including improvisation, song writing, and listening, to promote emotional expression and personal development

Maintain accurate and confidential clinical notes and prepare end-of-therapy reports

Collaborate with carers, teachers, SENCOs, and other therapists to ensure consistent support

Attend multidisciplinary meetings where appropriate

Contribute to a positive, trauma-informed, and neurodiversity-affirming culture

Follow all safeguarding and professional standards in line with HCPC and In Toto Ed policies

About You:

HCPC-registered Music Therapist

Minimum 2 years' post-qualification experience (ideally with children/young people)

Strong communication and record-keeping skills

Ability to work flexibly and independently

Willing to submit an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Check (DBS)

Completion of Child Protection Training and a commitment to promoting the safeguarding and welfare of all children and young people you work with

Desirable:

Experience in school or alternative provision settings

Familiarity with the EHCP process

Additional training in creative or integrative therapies

Experience working with SEN and SEMH needs, including ASD, ADHD, and trauma
