Clinical Fellow (SHO) with Research - General Surgery

The closing date is 29 April 2026

Applications are invited for the position of Clinical Research Fellow in the Division of Surgery at Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust.

We are looking for independent thinking, ambitious, and driven individuals with an interest in general surgery and research.

The successful candidate will be one who is seeking to build their portfolio / CV and expand their experience of research to pursue a career in surgery. Previous research experience is desirable, but not obligatory, and all ambitious surgical trainees are encouraged to apply.

Main duties of the job

This post is suitable for individuals capable of delivering a general surgical clinical service at SHO / core trainee level. Clinical duties involve participation in a regular general surgical on call slot, with the expectation that the candidate will be appropriately supported to develop supervised and, where appropriate, independent, surgical technical and non-technical skills.

Funding for research time as a trainee is extremely rare. This post particularly benefits from full‑time funding of a job plan that supports a roughly 50/50 split between research and clinical commitments while participation in an on‑call surgical rota without routine elective commitments.

The Department of General Surgery is an academically ambitious department and is looking to build further surgical research capacity while supporting current trials. The successful candidate will be asked to support existing research while running their own research projects, supported and supervised by experienced academics within the department.

It is anticipated that an initial 1 year post may be renewed for up to 1‑2 years if successful. Successful research activity would be expected to lead to application for award of an appropriate higher degree (MSc, MRes, MD) if desired. Prior research experience is advantageous but not obligatory.

For further information please contact Mr Philip Pucher, Consultant Upper GI Surgeon, p.pucher@nhs.net
