2026 Engineering (Field Service) Apprentice Modern Apprenticeship in Engineering

Location: Faslane Naval Base, Helensburgh (you will travel to and from Helensburgh and visit Glasgow College one day a week for study commitments)
Start Date: 07 September 2026
Salary: £24,000 per annum

Working Schedule: 37 hours a week – Monday – Thursday 8 hrs a day, Friday 5 hrs (flexible start 07:00‑09:30)

You will learn the engineering processes to support the front‑line Royal Navy within HMNB Clyde and beyond, working closely with a team of professional engineers to provide first‑class support on naval systems such as sonar, electronic warfare, communications, masts and periscopes.
Apprentice Programme
Through this programme you will complete a full Modern Apprenticeship, culminating in attainment of an SVQ PEO Level 2, Diploma 7 and an HNC Level Academic qualification. You will attend Glasgow College on a day‑release basis to complete your academic learning. The rest of the time you will work in the Thales business, applying your learning to real‑life projects.
On completion of the 4‑year programme, successful candidates will achieve fully qualified Engineering status and roll off into the business as Field Service Engineers.
Requirements
* Minimum of 2 Highers in English and Maths at a level A or B pass for HNC Level Training
* 5 National 5s including English, Maths and a science subject at Grade C or above
* Resident in Scotland on or before 1 August 2026 and for the duration of the programme

Security clearance – All successful candidates must possess a permanent right to work in the UK and will be required to undergo government security clearance at BPSS level and obtain full SC clearance prior to starting with us.
Recruitment Process – Assessment centres for shortlisted candidates will be held between February – May 2026. Induction week for all graduates and apprentices will run from Monday 7 September – Friday 11 September 2026.
