*Dunmow Group – Essex*
Dunmow Group is one of Essex’s leading waste management businesses, operating one of the county’s busiest and most respected fleets. We take pride in doing things properly — upholding high standards, supporting our people, and keeping our operations running efficiently every day.
*The Role*
We’re seeking an experienced *HGV Mechanic / Fitter / Workshop Manager* to take ownership of the maintenance and upkeep of our fleet of 50 HGVs operating across Essex.
Based in our fully equipped 2-bay workshop, you’ll be responsible for keeping our vehicles on the road — overseeing planned maintenance, responding to breakdowns, and ensuring our fleet meets all compliance and safety standards.
*Our Fleet*
You’ll be working across a diverse fleet of 50 vehicles, including:
* Skip Trucks
* Rolls On/Off
* Grab Trucks
* Tippers
* Articulated Trucks
The fleet is predominantly Volvo (approximately 80%), with the remainder being Scania, so strong familiarity with either or both makes will be a real advantage.
*What You’ll Be Doing*
* Managing the day-to-day maintenance and servicing schedule for the full fleet of 50 vehicles
* Diagnosing and repairing mechanical faults efficiently to minimise vehicle downtime
* Carrying out planned preventative maintenance (PPM) in line with manufacturer and legal requirements
* Ensuring all vehicles meet DVSA roadworthiness standards and compliance requirements
* Coordinating with drivers and the operations team to prioritise repairs and fleet availability
* Managing workshop records, service histories, and documentation
* Overseeing parts ordering and workshop supplies
* Maintaining a safe, clean, and well-organised workshop environment
*What We’re Looking For*
* Proven experience as an HGV mechanic, ideally in a fleet or workshop management environment
* Sound knowledge of Volvo and/or Scania trucks (other heavy commercial vehicles also considered)
* Experience across a variety of HGV types, including tippers, grabs, and articulated vehicles
* Strong diagnostic and fault-finding skills
* City & Guilds, NVQ Level 3, or equivalent qualification in HGV mechanics (desirable, but practical experience is equally valued)
* A natural leader who takes pride in their work and brings a positive, can-do attitude to the team
* Having some plant fitter and maintenance experience is an advantage, as we do from time to time need additional support with our Chelmsford production facility.
*The Right Person Will*
* Take genuine ownership of the fleet and the workshop
* Have high standards — doing the job right the first time
* Work well with drivers, operations staff, and management
* Be proactive in spotting issues before they become problems
* Share our values: reliability, professionalism, and pride in what we do
*Hours*
* 47.5 hours per week, Mon–Fri (10-hour shift, less 30 mins unpaid break)
* Alternate Saturdays: 07:00–13:00 (6 hours)
Job Types: Full-time, Permanent
Pay: £60,000.00-£70,000.00 per year
Benefits:
* Company pension
* On-site parking
* Referral programme
* Sick pay
Work Location: In person
