Job Overview
We have three 12‑month fixed‑term posts for an Acute Oncology GP with Specialist Interest (GPwSI). This is a part‑time post, with flexible working arrangements and options for school‑hours schedules across a minimum of four sessions per week.
Main Duties of the Job
The GPwSI will work as part of the multidisciplinary Acute Oncology Service, providing high‑quality, timely assessment and management of patients presenting with complications of cancer and cancer treatment.
The post-holder will report to the acute oncology service lead and work closely with the consultant oncologists, specialist nurses, pharmacists and the wider multidisciplinary team.
* Triage patients presenting with acute oncology issues arising due to cancer or treatment via telephone assessment or face‑to‑face outpatient assessments within the DCC, aiming to support admission avoidance through ambulatory pathways where appropriate.
* Review of on‑treatment oncology patients in the day unit and Medlock suite to improve patient safety and experience.
* Acute management and admission of acutely unwell patients presenting via oncology outpatient services.
* Participating in daily AOS huddles.
* Supporting inpatient outreach advice for oncology patients admitted with complications from their cancer or treatment to improve care and minimise length of stay.
* Review and admission avoidance of patients in ED during working hours.
* Assist in developing and maintaining robust communication channels across primary and secondary care.
Person Specification
Registration
Essential criteria: Full GMC registration prior to commencing this post.
Qualifications
* MBBS or equivalent.
* MRCGP.
* BLS.
Postgraduate Experience
* Training in the initial assessment and care of the acutely ill patient.
* Experience managing acutely unwell patients.
