Offer description

The Opportunity Norwich is a city with a distinguished scientific heritage, home to the world-renowned Norwich Research Park and a thriving community of life science and agritech innovators. We are seeking a dedicated Chemistry Teacher to join an ambitious Science faculty. In this role, you will be responsible for demystifying the molecular world—from the fundamental laws of thermodynamics to the intricate pathways of organic synthesis—inspiring students to see Chemistry as the "central science" that connects all other disciplines. The Department You will join a high-performing team that bridges the gap between theoretical classroom learning and cutting-edge laboratory practice. The department features modern, university-style labs equipped with high-spec fume cupboards, digital colorimeters, and specialized equipment for advanced titration and distillation. We follow a rigorous curriculum that prioritizes the "Big Ideas" in Chemistry, such as the Periodic Table as a predictive tool and the energetic basis of chemical change. We benefit from close proximity to the University of East Anglia (UEA), collaborating on outreach programs and providing students with access to undergraduate-level spectrometers and research facilities. Core Responsibilities Academic Delivery: Teaching Chemistry across Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 (GCSE), with a significant portion of the timetable dedicated to A-Level Chemistry (OCR A or AQA specifications). Atomic & Molecular Theory: Guiding students through the transition from Bohr models to quantum shells, helping them visualize orbital hybridization and molecular geometry. Quantitative Mastery: Coaching students in the "maths of chemistry," including complex stoichiometry, the Nernst equation, and the calculation of enthalpy and entropy changes. Practical Leadership: Managing the "Required Practicals" and the A-Level Practical Endorsement, ensuring students develop the high-level technical precision required for the laboratory. STEM Enrichment: Leading the school’s "Royal Society of Chemistry" challenge team and organizing visits to local chemical engineering and pharmaceutical sites. The Successful Candidate We are looking for a subject specialist who can make a chemical equation feel like a gateway to the future. Requirements include: Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and a degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related field. Laboratory Precision: An expert understanding of chemical safety (CLEAPSS) and the ability to demonstrate complex experiments with clarity and confidence. Analytical Thinking: The ability to help students deconstruct complex problems, using modelling and analogy to explain abstract concepts like equilibrium or reaction mechanisms. Engagement: A teacher who can relate chemical principles to modern issues like lithium-ion battery technology, carbon capture, and pharmaceutical development. Why Join Us? A school that treats Chemistry as a flagship subject with a strong track record of students progressing to Medicine and Chemical Engineering. Access to specialized professional development focused on "Active Chemistry" pedagogy and the integration of digital modelling tools. The opportunity to work in Norwich—a historic "fine city" that offers a vibrant cultural scene, beautiful medieval architecture, and easy access to the Norfolk Broads and coast. A supportive, collaborative staff environment within a school that is deeply committed to both student and teacher well-being.
