An exciting opportunity has arisen for a confident, highly motivated, and inspirational senior nurse to join our Emergency Services management team, based at the Southport site covering 12 months maternity leave.

As a Matron for Emergency Services, you will be accountable for coordinating safe, high-quality care to improve the experience for patients and their families. You will provide senior clinical and professional nursing leadership within the ED, acting as a positive role model through the provision of effective professional leadership and the demonstration of competent, accountable clinical practice.
The successful candidate will work to ensure a seamless and high standard of service provision 24 hours a day. We are seeking a dynamic and forward-thinking senior nurse, with a track record of delivering safe and effective, patient-centred care. You will be joining a dynamic Team of Matrons in medicine, surgery, community and corporate services, working together to provide outstanding care for our patients.
The successful applicant will be able to demonstrate a thorough understanding of Emergency Services, from Emergency Department to assessment/inpatient areas, and on to discharge. You will be able to demonstrate your ability to communicate at a senior level.
Main duties of the job
* Provide clinical, professional and managerial leadership within the service, ensuring that action is taken at all levels to empower Nurses/Midwives in providing demonstrably high standards of care in a clean and safe environment.
* Provide strong clinical leadership skills, with the ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team, work across boundaries, influence and lead others in practice to deliver clinical outcomes.
* Be visible to patients, relatives and staff and act as a champion for quality and equality of standards and patient care within the Trust.
* Act as lead nurse/midwife for the care of patients within their sphere of responsibility.
* Be responsible for the implementation, monitoring, training and audit of all quality standards, in particular infection prevention and control measures within areas of responsibility.
* Support service improvements ensuring patient safety and quality of care within these processes.
* Maintain overall accountability for monitoring, reviewing, improving and providing evidence and assurance relating to patient care within their areas of responsibility.
* Provide nursing/midwifery knowledge and skills to undertake the operational management and strategic development of the service.
* Escalate any professional nursing concerns to the Associate Director of Nursing and Clinical Director/Manager as appropriate.
* Contribute to performance management of the service, ensuring delivery of key targets by assisting in collecting and collating evidence to demonstrate compliance with CQC standards and escalation as needed.
* Maintain a high profile in clinical areas, being accessible to staff, patients and families, providing support and advice and addressing problems.
* Lead, facilitate and chair meetings across the CBU/service or Trust, providing clinical expertise and professional leadership for designated projects.
* Participate in and lead CBU/service and nurse management issues.
Service quality, improvement and development
* Manage and lead change in work methods and practice to improve standards of care for patients.
* Identify opportunities for improvements in nursing/midwifery and clinical practices as highlighted through evidence, research-based practice and national standards (e.g., National Service Frameworks, NICE, local QCI and metrics).
* Evaluate proposed changes for benefits and disadvantages and plan implementation while ensuring compliance with QCI standards.
* Comply with relevant policies, procedures and training on infection prevention and control and lead IPC principles within their services.
* Improve patient experience by ensuring high standards of clinical/non-clinical care through effective line management and professional leadership of the nursing workforce.
* Ensure delivery of nursing/midwifery care and the environment is patient-focused, especially for complex and vulnerable patients.
* Ensure action is taken on statutory feedback through audits and CQC/Friends and Family/complaints, with lessons learnt fed back to staff and remedial action implemented.
* Work with governance leads to ensure that nursing/midwifery complaints and incidents are promptly investigated and resolved within timeframes.
* Collaborate with service leadership to ensure patient flow is effective and efficient.
* Contribute to the strategic direction of the service through meeting key performance indicators and national initiatives/standards.
* Provide assurance around clinical governance within their remit and escalate concerns as needed.
Budget and resource management
* Manage the use of physical resources in collaboration with Ward Managers/Sisters/Charge Nurses to provide a safe, effective, high-quality service that is cost effective.
* Be responsible and accountable within delegated budget and authorise expenditure in line with financial instructions.
* Ensure robust systems are in place for budget management and achievement of finance targets.
* Act as authorised signatory for timesheets and temporary staffing.
* Develop managers/leaders in understanding and adherence to the Trust’s Financial Regulations/Standing Financial Instructions.
* Identify cost improvement plans (CIPs) and implement them within the CBU/service.
* Be responsible for the compliance, efficiency and effectiveness of each E-roster within their service and ensure rostering supports safe, effective service delivery.
* Attend regular monitoring meetings to demonstrate E-roster compliance for designated wards.
* Support managers to manage bank and agency nursing staff within budget and reduce agency expenditure.
* Work with senior leadership to lead the service lines in a business-like way to ensure safe and effective resource management.
* Maintain use of physical resources in line with budget allocation and ensure environments meet cleaning and infection control standards.
Professional Conduct
* Maintain and develop own professional competence and comply with NMC standards at all times.
* Act as a role model for nursing/midwifery and clinical staff, ensuring practice aligns with role, job description and professional parameters.
* Continuously develop knowledge and skills, particularly in evidence-based practice.

Person specification
Qualifications
* Registered Nurse (Level 1)
* Mentorship in Clinical Practice equivalent Level 6
* Recognised leadership qualification (minimum ILM Level 5 or equivalent) or working towards or equivalent experience
* Evidence of commitment to continuous learning and application in practice
* First Degree or equivalent knowledge/experience
* Master’s Degree in Nursing or working towards
