Are you an experienced Hostel Caretaker? Do you have experience providing maninternance support to residents within a busy homeless service?Job Purpose: To ensure the smooth day-to-day running, safety, and security of the hostel premises and its residents. The Hostel Caretaker will play a vital role in maintaining a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for residents, supporting the council’s commitment to providing quality temporary accommodation to those in housing need.
Key Responsibilities: Building & Facilities Management
Carry out daily inspections of the hostel, ensuring all communal areas are clean, safe, and well-maintained.
Report and follow up on repairs, maintenance, or health and safety issues promptly.
Liaise with contractors, maintenance teams, and other council departments as required.
Conduct basic repairs and maintenance (e.g. changing light bulbs, minor plumbing, or furniture repairs).Health, Safety & Security
Ensure that fire safety, security, and health & safety procedures are adhered to at all times.
Conduct regular fire alarm and safety equipment checks, maintaining accurate records.
Monitor access to the building and take appropriate action in the event of unauthorised entry or anti-social behaviour.
Respond to emergencies, incidents, and out-of-hours call-outs in accordance with council policy.Resident Support & Engagement
Provide a visible and approachable presence on-site for residents.
Offer practical advice and basic support, referring residents to support officers or housing staff as appropriate.
Assist with new resident inductions, ensuring they understand hostel rules and safety procedures.
Help manage move-ins and move-outs, including room inspections and inventories.Administrative & Operational Tasks
Maintain accurate records, logs, and reports (e.g. repairs, incidents, occupancy).
Ensure compliance with council policies and procedures, including safeguarding, equality, and data protection.
Participate in team meetings, training, and supervision as required.Person Specification: Essential
Experience working in a caretaking, facilities, or housing support role.
Basic maintenance and DIY skills.
Understanding of health and safety and fire safety principles.
Good communication and interpersonal skills with a customer-focused approach.
Ability to remain calm and professional in challenging situations.
Reliable, self-motivated, and able to work independently or as part of a team.
Basic IT and record-keeping skills.Desirable
Experience working in supported housing, hostels, or homelessness services.
Knowledge of safeguarding and confidentiality requirements.
First Aid and/or Fire Marshal training.
