Band 6 - Paediatric Team Leader - Fixed Term/Secondment - A&E -EDGH
We are a very busy Emergency Department, treating on average 50,000 patients a year. We are looking for a Band 6 Paediatric Sister / Charge Nurse to join our proactive and dynamic team for up to 12 months Fixed Term Contract or Secondment professional development opportunity.
Are you a qualified registered Children’s Nurse with relevant post‑registration experience at Band 5 or above in ED nursing or general paediatrics? Do you hold a mentorship qualification and child protection qualification or experience? Do you have leadership skills and can you effectively contribute to team working in a busy dynamic environment?
This is an opportunity to help shape the development of children’s designated emergency care area within the Emergency Department. You will have the ability to assess and commence high‑impact interventions supported by PGDs while awaiting assessment by a paediatrician.
You will be part of a paediatric nurses team in the Emergency Department, providing care and acting as the patient’s advocate to maintain safe, compassionate care. You are competent or willing to undertake further relevant training in paediatric minor illnesses and injuries. A minimum of 2 years post‑qualification in an urgent care setting is desirable.
Main Duties of the Job

* Monitor standards of paediatric nursing care and take appropriate action to maintain and improve them.
* Respond to patients and their relatives/carers concerns and take remedial action as required.
* Provide ongoing referrals to support or treatments for children and carers/parents when necessary in the community.
* Assess, recognise, prioritise and evaluate children with minor injuries or serious illness presenting for urgent care.
* Manage paediatric minor illnesses and injuries within scope of competency using PGDs where available; seek clinical support from U&EC consultants, paediatric consultants or senior paediatric doctors when required.
* Effectively manage and develop the nursing team within the Urgent and Emergency centre and provide professional and clinical leadership in delivering high‑quality, safe, cost‑effective care to children and families.
* Develop the role of the Paediatric Nurse Practitioner / Paediatric Emergency Nurse Practitioner, assisting in meeting the standard that all children are assessed, treated and discharged or admitted within 4 hours of arrival.
Qualifications
* Registered Nurse with active registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).
* Degree level qualification relevant to the role.
* Professional qualification and training to lead the clinical team with relevant knowledge and skills for the specialist area.
* Evidence of mandatory and statutory essential training (e.g., Basic Life Support, manual handling, infection control, fire safety).
* Management or leadership qualification or training.
* Quality improvement training and qualification.
Experience
* Experience in nursing care, knowledge and expertise relevant to the clinical area within the NHS or a relevant health care organisation.
* Experience in the take‑charge role and ability to lead a shift, manage the clinical area, lead people and deal with emergencies and queries effectively.
* Experience in leading a team or service change/QI project.
Skills / Knowledge / Abilities
* Professional clinical knowledge and skills that demonstrate the ability to assess, plan, develop and implement programmes of care.
* Skills to assess and interpret complex needs of patients and give expert advice and guidance.
* Clinical skills and competence relevant to the role to support innovative, evidence‑based practice.
* Day‑to‑day management of a patient caseload, working under own initiative and delegating effectively.
* Digital skills: use of systems, report writing and presentation skills.
Other
* Able to manage the physical and emotional demands of the role, including moving and handling of patients, concentration to provide clinical care, calculation of drug dosages and communication of distressing or unwelcome information.
* Flexibility in working hours and patterns.

Salary: £39,959 to £48,117 a year (pro rata).
