Training course: Mechatronics maintenance technician (Level 3)

Hours: Rotating week – 6:00 am – 2:00 pm or 2:00 pm – 10:00 pm, 5 days a week (40 hours a week).

Start date: Monday 7 September 2026
Duration: 3 years 6 months

Where you’ll work

You can select which locations you want to apply for in your application on Find an apprenticeship. This apprenticeship is available in:

* Princes Edible Oils – Crabree Manorway, Belvedere, DA1 6AB
* Princes Edible Oils – Church Manorway, Erith, DA8 1DL


Training

Apprenticeships include time away from working for specialist training. You’ll study to gain professional knowledge and skills.

Training course (Level 3)

Key training topics include:

* Using information technology for documentation, communication and information management.
* Reading and interpreting task‑related documentation such as work instructions, quality control documents, drawings, operation manuals, specifications and service manuals.
* Recording job sheets, risk assessments, equipment service records, test results, handover documents and other required records.
* Conducting initial equipment assessments and formulating maintenance plans.
* Selecting, preparing and using materials, consumables, tools and equipment.
* Complying with health and safety regulations (COSHH, PUWER, LOLER, PPE) and applying safe systems of work.
* Applying risk assessment, hazard identification and mitigation.
* Implementing isolation principles when equipment requires maintenance.
* Manufacturing, repairing and refurbishing components using hand and machine tools.
* Restoring the workplace and handing over resources after maintenance.
* Using reactive, preventative and planned maintenance techniques on electrical, electronic, mechanical, fluid power and control systems.
* Performing functional testing and handover to the operational team.
* Condition monitoring, non‑destructive testing and recording findings.
* Performing calculations (feed rates, speeds, tolerances, Ohm’s law, power, cable sizing).
* Calibrating electrical and mechanical measuring equipment.
* Producing sketches or drawings to support maintenance.
* Communicating in writing and verbally, negotiating with colleagues or stakeholders.
* Applying 4S/5S housekeeping principles.
* Identifying improvement opportunities and applying continuous improvement techniques.
* Following equity, diversity and inclusion procedures.
* Documenting planned and unplanned learning activities.
* Applying fault‑finding techniques on complex integrated systems.
* Year‑by‑year progression (Year 1: 4 days/week at IPS Rochester for practical skills; Year 2 onward: day‑release with IPS for Technical Certificate training; regular contact throughout the programme).


Requirements

GCSE in Maths and English (Grade 4/C or above). Share any other relevant qualifications and industry experience; the apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.
